银杏有非常古老悠久的历史。早在2.7亿年前,它已经出现在我们这个星球上。经大约1亿年的漫长岁月,银杏发展到它的鼎盛时期。大片大片的银杏树林,几乎遍布于世界的每一个角落,与同时代生活的恐龙一样普遍。因此,人们又称它为“植物界的恐龙”。但在以后的岁月中,银杏也像许多盛极一时的帝国一样,由盛而衰,渐渐失去了它的主宰地位。到了第三纪,地球上的气候发生剧变,山脉不断隆起,银杏在与新植物群的竞争中,被迫退出生物界的历史舞台。只有少数地区,由于受到得天独厚的地理环境的保护,才有少量的银杏侥幸保存下来,它们成了植物界中的稀世之物,科学家心目中的“植物活化石”。
相对其他植物而言,银杏的生长速度很缓慢。在一般情况下,栽种下它的幼苗,要经过l5-20年才能结果,有的甚至需要30—40年时间。正如俗话说的那样,公公种树,孙子吃果,因此人们又给它起了个形象的外号“公孙树”。

那么,银杏为什么这样长寿呢?
植物学家在研究中发现,凡是“高寿”的古老银杏,都有极为发达的根系,扎入地下很深的地方,还有利于抵抗各种不良环境。另外,由于银杏生长缓慢,需要的养分比较少,它完全有可能在一个地方活上几百年,甚至上千年。还有一个导致银杏长寿的原因,就是它的病虫害较少。这是因为银杏体内舍有一种叫乙烯醛的物质和多种有机酸,这些物质具有强烈的抑茵杀虫作用,所以银杏很少受到病虫害的侵袭。
