Tanya Ferguson lives in Sydney. On September 23, she woke up to a big gust of wind blowing through her window. She then saw that the room was completely orange.
“I could not believe my eyes,” she told BBC news. She thought there was a bush fire. But when she went outside, the entire city was covered in a film of orange dust.
“It was like being in the outback(内陆), but it was right here in the city,” she said. On that day, a big dust storm swept through Sydney. It covered the city in orange dust for about eight hours, making landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge invisible.
The storm affected the transportation system. Flights were delayed. Roads were busy as drivers struggled in the difficult conditions. Children and the elderly were told to stay indoors until the dust had cleared. Later strong winds blew it out to sea and up the coast.
No one was hurt in the storm, though health officials answered hundreds of calls from people with breathing difficulties. Emergency services responded to hundreds of calls about tree branches brought down by strong winds.
Dust storms are common in the Australian outback, where the land is poor. But the storms rarely reach the coastal regions.
Officials said it was the worst dust storm of the past 70 years. Air pollution levels were 15,500 micrograms of pollutants per cubic meter.
“On a clear day the pollutants are around 10-20 micrograms per cubic meter,” said Chris Eiser of the NSW department of the environment.
Experts said that dry conditions in the outback and strong winds caused the sandstorm. “Ten very dry years over inland southern Australia and very strong winds have cooperated to produce the storm,” said Nigel Tapper, an environmental scientist at Monash University, Australia.

"And because I know you are all able to understand this material, I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test."
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the remaining (余下的) students and said, "Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance. "Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences which were typed on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life's lessons, whether from formal education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now, and you realize that you have some limits( 局限). I really feel worried about you. You used to do well in your lessons and took an active part in the activities at school. But now you are so crazy about computer games that you have no interest in your schoolwork and don't listen to teachers as carefully as before in class. Also, you can't hand in your homework on time.
Perhaps playing computer games can make you feel relaxed, but if you spend too much time on it, you will have less time to study. And it may do harm to your health. For example, it can hurt your eyes and neck.
I hope you should achieve a balance between your schoolwork and your hobbies. Why not join in some outdoor activities when you feel bored? As your friend, I’ll be glad to share your happiness and sadness. Best wishes. Li Hua

Tanya Ferguson lives in Sydney. On September 23, she woke
up to a strong wind blowing through her window. She then saw that
the room was completely orange.
―I could not believe my eyes,‖ she told BBC news. She thought
there was a bush fire. But when she went outside, the whole city
was covered in a film of orange dust.
―It was like being in the outback (内陆), but it was right here
in the city,‖ she said.
On that day, a big dust storm swept through Sydney. It covered the city in orange dust for about eight hours, and people can’t see landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge.
The storm influenced the transportation system. Flights were put off. Roads were busy in the difficult conditions. Children and the elderly were told to stay indoors until the dust had cleared. Later strong winds blew it out to sea and up the coast. No one was hurt in the storm, though health officials and emergency services answered hundreds of calls from people with breathing(呼吸)difficulties.
Dust storms are common in the Australian outback, where the land is poor. But the storms
hardly reach the coastal areas. Officials said it was the worst dust storm of the past 70 years. Experts said that dry conditions in the outback and strong winds caused the sandstorm.

Tanya Ferguson lives in Sydney. On September 23, she
woke up to a strong wind blowing through her window. She
then saw that the room was completely orange.
“I could not believe my eyes,” she told BBC news.
She thought there was a bush fire. But when she went outside,
the whole city was covered in a film of orange dust.
“It was like being in the outback (内陆), but it was
right here in the city,” she said.
But the storms hardly reach the coastal areas. Officials said it was the worst dust storm of the past 70 years. Experts said that dry conditions in the outback and strong winds caused the sandstorm.
“Ten very dry years over inland southern Australia and very strong winds have co-operated to produce the storm,” said Nigel Tapper, an environmental scientist at Monash University, Australia.

The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was about to hand out the final exam papers. "I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test,“he said.
They have learned life's lessons, whether from formal education or from events in their
lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now, and you realize that you have some limits( 局限). However, there is nothing you can't do or leant to be. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) said, "We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves. "
31. Why did some students leave the classroom?
A .Because they were happy with the mark the teacher would give them.
B. Because they were allowed to take another easier exam later on.
C. Because they knew the teacher didn't like them to take the test.
D. Because they thought the exam was too easy to be worth a try.
32. Why did the teacher give the remaining students an A?
A. Because they answered all the questions in the exam correctly.
B. Because they had been promised an A by the teacher before.
C. Because they were confident in what they had learned.
D. Because they had been working hard for each exam.
33. What does the underlined word "conquer" mean in the passage?
A. 发现 B. 控制 C. 探索 D. 征服
34. By the age of ________, most of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed.
A. 6 years old B. 8 years old C. 18 years old D. 80 years old
35. What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A. He wants us to know what our limits are.
B. He wants us to learn to believe in ourselves.
C. He wants us to receive formal education.
D. He wants us to learn from B students.

During the day we work and play, and at night we sleep. Our body rests while we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. Our body grows most while we are asleep. Children who are tired usually need sleep. We can get better at our lessons after we have had enough rest. Boys and girls who are eight or nine years old need ten hours of sleep every night. Our body needs plenty of air when we sleep. If we do not get enough fresh air, we will feel tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover our head. Our lungs (肺) need to get enough fresh air. Tanya Ferguson lives in Sydney. On September 23, she
woke up to a strong wind blowing through her window. She
then saw that the room was completely orange.
“I could not believe my eyes,” she told BBC news.
She thought there was a bush fire. But when she went
outside, the whole city was covered in a film of orange dust.
“It was like being in the outback (内陆), but it was
right here in the city,” she said.
On that day, a big dust storm swept through Sydney. It covered the city in orange dust for about eight hours, and people can’t see landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge.
The storm influenced the transportation system. Flights were put off. Roads were
busy in the difficult conditions.
But the storms hardly reach the coastal areas. Officials said it was the worst dust storm of the past 70 years. Experts said that dry conditions in the outback and strong winds caused the sandstorm.

The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was about to hand out the final exam papers. "I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test,“he said.
