You‘ve now heard it so many time, you can probably repeat it in your sleep. President Obama will no doubt __51__the point publicly when he gets to Beijing: the Chinese need to __52__more; they need—believe it or not—to become more like Americans, for the sake of the global economy.
And it‘s all true. __53__the other side of that equation is that the U.S. needs to save more. For the moment, American households actually are doing so. After the personal-savings rate __54__to zero in 2005, the shock of the economic __55__last year prompted people to snap __56__their wallets. In China, the household-savings rate exceeds 20%. It is partly for policy__57__. As we‘ve seen, wage earners are expected to __58__not only their children but their aging parents. And there is, to date, only the flimsiest (脆弱的) of publicly-funded health care and pension systems, which increases incentives for individuals to save __59__they are working. But China is a society that has __60__esteemed personal financial prudence (谨慎). There is no __61__that will change anytime soon, even if the government creates a better social safety net and successfully encourages greater consumer spending.
Why does the U.S. need to learn a little frugality (节俭)? Because healthy savings rates are one of the surest indicators of a country‘s long-term financial health. High savings lead, over time, to increased investment, which in turn generates productivity gains, __62__and job growth. __63__, savings are the seed corn of a good economic harvest.
The U.S. government thus needs to act as well. By running __64__deficits, it is dis-saving, even as households save more. Peter Orszag, Obama‘s Budget Director, __65__called the U.S. budget deficits unsustainable and he‘s right. To date, the U.S. has seemed unable to see the consequences of spending so much more than is taken in. That needs to change. 51. A. play 53. A. But

When people think of improving their diet, they often talk about eating more fruits and vegetables. Others want to eat more fish and less red meat, in addition to reducing the amount of food they eat. But, they can improve their diets even more with just a simple addition. American researchers have found that a diet rich in spices can help reduce the harmful effects of eating high fat meals.
Pennsylvania State University Associate Professor Shiela West led an investigation of the health effects of a spice-rich diet. Her team knew that a high-fat meal produces high levels of triglycerides (甘油三脂), a kind of fat, in the blood. She said, ―If this happens too frequently, or if triglyceride levels are raised too much, your risk of heart disease is increased.‖
As part of the study, her team prepared meals on two separate days for six men between the ages of 30 and 65. The men were overweight, but healthy. The researchers added about 30 milliliters of spices to each serving of the test meal, which included chicken curry, Italian herb bread and a cinnamon (肉桂树皮)biscuit. The meal for the control group was the same, but it did not include any spices.
During the experiment, the researchers removed blood from the men every 30 minutes for three hours. They found that antioxidant activity (抗氧化活性) in the blood of the men who ate the spicy meal was 13 percent higher than it was for the men who did not. In addition, insulin (胰岛素) activity dropped by about 20 percent in the men who ate the spicy food.
Shiela West says many scientists think that oxidative stress leads to heart disease. And what exactly is oxidative stress? Think of an apple that has been cut in half and set aside for half an hour or so. The cut side of the apple turns brown. That is a simple explanation of what happens when oxidative stress comes in contact with the inside and outside of our bodies.
Professor West says, ―Antioxidants, like spices, may be important in reducing oxidative stress and thus reducing the risk of chronic disease.‖ She adds that the level of spices used in the study provided the same amount of antioxidants found in 150 milliliters of red wine or about 38 grams of dark chocolate.
66. What does the author advise people to do in their diets?
A. Eating large amount of food. B. Eating less fruits and vegetables.
C. Eating more vegetables and fish. D. Eating small amount of food with spices.
67. What is the function of spices according to the passage?
A. To help people lose weight. B. To cure chronic disease. C. To reduce the risk of heart disease. D. To cause oxidative stress.
68. What happened to the men who ate the spicy meal according to the experiment? A. The antioxidant activity in their blood became increased. B. The insulin activity in their body became increased. C. The level of triglyceride in their blood was increased. D. The oxidative stress in their body was strengthened.
69. What does Professor West show by citing the example of a half apple? A. The whole thing can be divided into two parts. B. It implies oxidative stress is harmful to our health. C. An apple is the only food that contains antioxidants. D. We can keep diseases away if we have an apple a day.

We are not who we think we are.
The American self-image is suffused with the golden glow of opportunity. We think of the United States as a land of unlimited possibility, not so much a classless society but as a place where class is mutable—a place where brains, energy and ambition are what counts, not the circumstances of one's birth.
The Economic Mobility Project, an ambitious research initiative led by Pew Charitable Trusts, looked at the economic fortunes of a large group of families over time, comparing the income of parents in the late 1960s with the income of their children in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Here is the finding: "The 'rags to riches' story is much more common in Hollywood than on Main Street. Only 6 percent of children born to parents with family income at the very bottom move to the top.
That is right, just 6 percent of children born to parents who ranked in the bottom fifth of the study sample, in terms of income, were able to bootstrap their way into the top fifth. Meanwhile, an incredible 42 percent of children born into that lowest quintile are still stuck at the bottom, having been unable to climb a single rung of the income ladder.
It is noted that even in Britain-a nation we think of as burdened with a hidebound class system-children who are born poor have a better chance of moving up. When the three studies were released, most reporters focused on the finding that African-Americans born to middle-class or upper middle-class families are earning slightly less, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than did their parents.
One of the studies indicates, in fact, that most of the financial gains white families have made in the past three decades can be attributed to the entry of white women into the labor force. This is much less true for African-Americans.
The picture that emerges from all the quintiles, correlations and percentages is of a nation in which, overall, "the current generation of adults is better off than the previous one", as one of the studies notes.
The median income of the families in the sample group was $55,600 in the late 1960s; their children's median family income was measured at $71,900. However, this rising tide has not lifted all boats equally. The rich have seen far greater income gains than have the poor.
Even more troubling is that our notion of America as the land of opportunity gets little support from the data. Americans move fairly easily up and down the middle rungs of the ladder, but there is "stickiness at the ends" —four out of ten children who are born poor will remain poor, and four out often who are born rich will stay rich.
74. What did the Economic Mobility Project find in its research?
A. Children from low-income families are unable to bootstrap their way to the top. B. Hollywood actors and actresses are upwardly mobile from rags to riches. C. The rags to riches story is more fiction than reality.
D. The rags to riches story is only true for a small minority of whites.
75. It can be inferred from the undertone of the writer that America, as a classless society, should ________.
A. perfect its self-image as a land of opportunity
B. have a higher level of upward mobility than Britain
C. enable African-Americans to have exclusive access to well-paid employment D. encourage the current generation to work as hard as the previous generation 76. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The US is a land where brains, energy and ambition are what counts. B. Inequality persists between whites and blacks in financial gains. C. Middle-class families earn slightly less with inflation considered.
D. Children in lowest-income families manage to climb a single rung of the ladder. 77. What might be the best title for this passage? A. Social Upward Mobility. B. Incredible Income Gains. C. Inequality in Wealth. D. America Not Land of Opportunity.
It is 2035. You have a job, a family and you are about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.
Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. ―Turn red,‖ you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you‘re 40. You look much younger. With amazing progress in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You are not even middle-aged!
As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, ―To lose weight, you shouldn‘t eat that,‖ from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. ―Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?‖ A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies. P.F. Productions

Do you enjoy street performers? The tradition of wandering entertainers goes back for almost a thousand years to the Middle Ages in Europe. Then they were called “troubadours”, but, today, most people call street performers “buskers”. Buskers are usually musicians, but some are actors, clowns, or jugglers. In Singapore, hundreds of street buskers from around the world participate in an annual festival. In other cities, you often come across buskers on busy shopping streets and near parks, but the most popular places are subway stations. Passengers listen to the musicians while they wait for underground trains. In exchange for a few minutes of entertainment, they give the busker some money before they move on to catch their train.
Not long ago in Boston, the government tried to establish a controversial(引起争端的) new law to control buskers in the subway. The authorities said that musicians were playing instruments so loudly that passengers couldn’t hear the train announcements. The new law intended to stop the use of amplifiers(扩音器) to make music louder. Loud instruments such as saxophones, trumpets, and electric guitars were not allowed either. In addition, the new law required performers to pay for a license and follow a dress code. These rules came as a surprise to many buskers. Well-known musicians such as Tracy Chapman and Melissa Etheridge made names for themselves singing in the Boston subway. The entertainers pointed out that, traditionally, the subway was a place where humble (地位低下的) young musicians could start to make a name for himself or herself. Thousands of people complained that the new law was unfair. They wanted to restore buskers’ rights.
Under pressure from the public, the authorities looked at how other cities dealt with buskers in their subways. They learned that in London, New York, and Toronto, buskers were allowed to play loud instruments and use amplifiers, but first they had to pass a musical test to establish that they were good
enough to play in public. By contrast, Washington DC doesn’t allow any performers in their subways for security reasons. Back in Boston, the government took these factors into account. The law was changed to say that buskers must hold back the sound level to a minimum, but they would be allowed to go on playing. Passengers were happy that they would continue to have some music on their route to work. Young artists in Boston still stand a chance of establishing their musical careers in the subway stations. 35. What were street musicians called in the Middle Ages?A. Troubadours.

As she lay there in the hospital bed, I stared at her sunken face. Her mouth hung open and a moan (呻吟) escaped every so often, an old woman well beyond her 71 years. In four months this is what she has become — daily exercising, strong willed, world traveling women has been eaten from the inside out by cancer. Four months! It is a shock that’s difficult for me to wrap my brain around. It makes me want to tell everyone I love them.
I study her face and will her to open her eyes. What will I say if she does? In the 20 years I have known this woman, and I have struggled to understand her, battled her opinions, endured her criticisms, and loved her son beyond measure. I think of all the times I have wanted to make her disappear. All the times I thought about what I would feel when she was gone. Relief, joy, guilt, or nothing?
I think my children saved me from truly hating her. Earlier that day, I watched my 12-year-old son Austin, who she loved fiercely, sitting by her bed and studied her face searching for his beloved “Bubbe” and wondering if she’d ever return. He once caught her awake and looked her right in the eye, saying, “I love you, Bubbe. I hope you get better.” His words pierced(刺痛) my heart for I know she is not getting better.
Would she hear my silent plea (恳求) and open her eyes? She is so stubborn and never cares what others think. My mind wanders through the past twenty years. I realize how fragile(脆弱) she was when we first met only one month after her husband had died suddenly. Remembering a story she told me about her husband bringing her daffodils(水仙花) makes me see her through his eyes. I think of the love
and attention she showers on my sons and I see her through their eyes. Her stories of her childhood and her father’s unstable income make me see why she pushes my husband to make more money.39. According to the passage, the old woman is the author’s ______. A. mother

D. The author could see that she showed love for her family.41. What do we know about the old woman? A. She had been energetic before she got cancer. B. She lived alone after her husband’s death. C. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Three scientists won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention of blue light-emitting diodes (LED), a new energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly light source, the award-giving body announced Tuesday.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2014 to Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano from Japan and Japan-born U.S. scientist Shuji Nakamura.
"With the advent(到来) of LED lamps we now have more long-lasting and more efficient alternatives to older light sources," the jury said in a statement.
The LED lamp holds great promise for increasing the quality of life for over 1.5 billion people around the world who lack access to electricity grids, as it can be powered by cheap local solar power due to low power requirements, the statement said.
The invention of the blue LED is just 20 years old, "but it has already contributed to creating white light in an entirely new manner to the benefit of us all," it added.
Commenting on this year's invention, Prof. Olle Inganas from the Nobel Committee of Physics said it was benefiting mankind and thus in accordance(与······一致) with Alfred Nobel's will.
The statement said, "when the three scientists produced bright blue light beams from their semi-conductors(半导体) in the early 1990s, they a fundamental transformation of lighting technology. Red and green diodes had been around for a long time but without blue light, white lamps could not be created. Despite considerable efforts, both in the scientific community and in industry, the blue LED had remained a challenge for three decades."
"Their inventions were revolutionary. Incandescent light bulbs(白炽灯) lit the 20th century; the 21st century will be lit by LED lamps," commented the statement.
This year's prize, 8 million Swedish crown (about 1.12 million U.S. dollars), will be shared equally between the three laureates(戴桂冠者).43. What is the feature of the invention of LED?

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the
ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim(苗条) and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.
47. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.48. The son of a piano producer, Elwyn Brooks White was born in Mount Vernon in a wealthy family. And he was raised with the mix of sophistication(良好教养) and common sense that would mark his writing.
After graduation, White spent a year as a newspaper reporter in New York City, and then decided to drive across the country with a friend. The trip gave White a lifetime of anecdotes.“When they ran out of money," White's friend, James Thurber, noted, "they played for their supper and their gasoline on an interesting musical instrument that White had made out of some pieces of wire and an old shoe."
When White returned to New York City in the mid-1920s, he spent a few years bouncing between advertising jobs and unemployment before trying his hand again at writing. Not very seriously, he sent some essays to a new magazine called The New Yorker. Since its founding in 1925, the magazine had struggled to find on the map. His essays were funny and sophisticated; they spoke equally to socialites(社会名流)and cab drivers, professors and repairmen. Through his essays, which he wrote for nearly 50 years,

Directions: Read the following four passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To
some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring
environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways. It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children‟s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.
Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children‟s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from
separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person.
In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children‟s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the
children‟s telomeres—in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.
Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.
Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.
He study confirms a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.
74. The new study found that ________.
A. violence leaves scars on a child‟s mind
B. hardship can change a child‟s aging
C. violence can speed up a child‟s aging
D. hardship has a long-term effect on a child‟s mind
75. According to the text, telomeres ________.
A. can make a cell die quickly
B. can help prevent DNA from separating
C. become shorter before they die
D. are at the ends of people‟s chromosomes
76. All of the following things can shorten telomeres EXCEPT ________.
A. smoking B. cell division
C. maltreatment D. doing exercise
77. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?
A. Violence can cause quick cell division in children‟s body.
B. Being treated badly will make a child‟s telomeres shorten faster.
C. Researchers measured the children‟s telomeres from their legs in the study.
D. Children who have shorter telomeres may have a heart attack earlier.

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. You‟ve now heard it so many time, you can probably repeat it in your sleep. President Obama will no doubt __51__the point publicly when he gets to Beijing: the Chinese need to __52__more; they need—believe it or not—to become more like Americans, for the sake of the global economy.
And it‟s all true. __53__the other side of that equation is that the U.S. needs to save more. For the moment,American households actually are doing so. After the personal-savings rate __54__to zero in 2005, the shock of the economic __55__last year prompted people to snap __56__their wallets. In China, the household-savings rate exceeds 20%. It is partly for policy__57__. As we‟ve seen, wage earners are expected to __58__not only their children but their aging parents.
Why does the U.S. need to learn a little frugality (节俭)?Because healthy savings rates are one of the surest indicators of a country‟s long-term financial health. High savings lead, over time, to increased investment, which in turn generates productivity gains, __62__and job growth. __63__, savings are the seed corn of a good economic harvest.
The U.S. government thus needs to act as well. By running __64__deficits, it is dis-saving, even as households save more. Peter Orszag, Obama‟s Budget Director, __65__called the U.S. budget deficits unsustainable and he‟s right. To date, the U.S. has seemed unable to see the consequences of spending so much more than is taken in. That needs to change.

In giving advice, you must learn to understand the person‟s level of judgment. There will be some people who come to you with unconnected knowledge, talking about, say, Vitamin B12 and other modern__41__. When they ask advice, begin at that level. Unless you start at their own level, they will not be able to understand. You must explain to them in scientific terms the effects of the food they eat, and how they need to __42__it.
You have to train yourself to be very__43__. Staying at one level is not being a free man. If we stay at a very high level all the time, that is not practical. A limitless person goes __44__from one level of thinking to another, according to his circumstances. To do this we must get rid of our unwillingness to change our way of thinking or behavior, become friends with everyone, and have the same loving feelings for everyone. Then we can give advice to all kinds of people. If there is someone or something you dislike, you are still__45__, and your ability to give advice is reduced. For anyone, the same. A free person acts like that.
You cannot stay with a sick person all the time. You must __46__ a person‟s freedom as much as you can. If
people really want to die, let them—it is their freedom. The point is never to become an authority__47__; remain a friend or advisor. People should not come back __48__for consultation; if they do, your advice has been incomplete—you did not know how to give the __49__advice about freedom. If they do not understand that, sick people become slaves; they are still afraid inside, and are__50__. That is no way to build a healthy world and help people become happy and free. Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A) When people think of improving their diet, they often talk about eating more fruits and vegetables.
Her team knew that a high-fat meal produces high levels of triglycerides(甘油三脂), a kind of fat, in the blood. She said, “If this happens too frequently, or if triglyceride levels are raised too much, your risk of heart disease is increased.”
As part of the study, her team prepared meals on two separate days for six men between the ages of 30 and 65. The men were overweight, but healthy. The researchers added about 30 milliliters of spices to each serving of the test meal, which included chicken curry, Italian herb bread and a cinnamon(肉桂树皮)biscuit. The meal for the control group was the same, but it did not include any spices.
During the experiment, the researchers removed blood from the men every 30 minutes for three hours. They found that antioxidant activity(抗氧化活性) in the blood of the men who ate the spicy meal was 13 percent higher than it was for the men who did not. In addition, insulin(胰岛素) activity dropped by about 20 percent in the men who ate the spicy food.
Professor West says, “Antioxidants, like spices, may be important in reducing oxidative stress and thus reducing the risk of chronic disease.” She adds that the level of spices used in the study provided the same amount of antioxidants found in 150 milliliters of red wine or about 38 grams of dark chocolate.

C. enable African-Americans to have exclusive access to well-paid employment
D. encourage the current generation to work as hard as the previous generation
C. Inequality in Wealth. B. Incredible Income Gains. D. America Not Land of Opportunity.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
It is 2035. You have a job, a family and you are about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.
Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you‟re 40. You look much younger. With amazing progress in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You are not even middle-aged!
As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn‟t eat that,” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies.
“Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space—and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical progress, vaccination shots(防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain the vaccines. With the strawberries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.
It‟s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office, Autopilot,” you order. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it.
(Notes: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)
78. What changes the color of your shirt?
79. The shoes know that you shouldn‟t eat the breakfast cereal by__________.
80. What do the strawberries the children eat serve as?
81. In the future, when you look through the pages in the e-newspapers, ___________.

Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. People have been influenced to become media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol.
The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.
I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的)relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money.
What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming(声明) the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology.
Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection, people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology.
5. The underlined word A. attraction B. advantage C. adaption D. attempt
6. From the passage, technology companies aim to ______.
A. improve people’s quality of life B. provide the latest information
C. attract people to buy their products D. deal with cultural diseases
7. It can be inferred from this passage that people ______.
A. consider too much technology wonderful
B. have realized the harm of high-tech devices
C. can regain freedom without high-tech devices
D. may enjoy life better without overused technology
8. What’s the author’s attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices?
A. Neutral. B. Disapproving. C. Sceptical.
D. Sympathetic.
Elizabeth Mitchell’s new “Liberty’s Torch” is the fascinating story of how the Statue of Liberty came to be. The Statue of Liberty’s rough history is explored in “Liberty’s Torch”.
Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is an all-but-forgotten figure in American history. He was, however, responsible for one of the most enduring symbols of the United States: the Statue of Liberty. A Frenchman from Alsace, he designed and built the Statue of Liberty which stood on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor. How this statue came to be is the fascinating subject of Elizabeth Michell’s new book “Liberty’s Torch”.
The power of Mitchell’s narrative is convincing(令人信服的). We recognize the Statue of Liberty now as a symbol of hope and opportunity for a nation of immigrants. At the time, though, people could not see that-nor did they even imagine that. Instead, the construction of the statue was born of one man’s desire to set up a great monument.
For this reason, perhaps, “Liberty’s Torch” relies on Bartholdi as the connecting thread. Bartholdi went to Egypt to make photographic copies of the main monuments. On the boat, Bartholdi met and began a lifelong relationship with Ferdinand de Lesseps, the man who would build the Suez Canal. Maybe it was this friendship, or maybe it was seeing Egypt’s huge monuments, but finally the trip inspired Bartholdi’s dream to create the largest statue ever built. Failure to bring this to completion in Egypt, followed by his exile (流放) from Paris, led Bartholdi to sail to America.
By explaining the Statue of Liberty’s hard history and showing Bartholdi’s brave spirit, Mitchell has done a great service.
9. It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A. the Statue of Liberty wasn’t originally regarded as a symbol of hope
B. American people have never forgotten Frederic August Bartholdi
C. Bartholdi was a famous architect from Egypt.
D. Bartholdi finished the Suez Canal
10. What was the main reason for Bartholdi to build the Statue of Liberty?
A. To finish his education in the arts.
B. To mark his friendship with Ferdinand.
C. To achieve his dream to create the largest statue.
D. To create something better than Egyptian monuments.
11. What type of writing is the passage?
A. A travel guide.
C. An announcement B. An architecture report. D. A book review.
What’s on Your Pet’s Mind?
In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. Her first experiments began with Alex. Alex was a one-year-old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.” At the time, most scientists didn’t believe animals had any thoughts. They thought animals were more like robots but didn’t have the ability to think or feel. Of course, if you own a pet, you probably disagree. But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think for themselves.
“That’s why I started my studies with Alex,” Irene said, “Some people actually called me crazy for trying this.”
Nowadays, we have more and more evidence that animals have all sorts of mental abilities. Sheep can recognize faces. Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alex, the parrot became a very good talker.
Thirty years after, the Alex studies began. Irene was still giving him English lessons until his recent death. For example, if Alex was hungry, he could say “want grape”. Alex could count to six and was learning the sounds for seven and eight. “He has to hear the words over and over before he can correctly say them.” Irene said, after pronouncing “seven” for Alex a few times in a row. Alex could also tell the difference between colors, shapes, sizes, and materials (e.g.wood and metal). Before he finally died, Alex managed to say “seven”.
Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mental skills was a dog called Rico. He appeared on a German TV game show in 2011. Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easily learned the names of new ones. When Rico became famous, many other dog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were. Another dog called Betsy could understand 300 words.
One theory for dogs’ ability to learn a language is that they have been close companions to humans for many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving (进化). While animals can’t do what humans do yet, some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intelligence, as well as physical appearance.

The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations. First, you ought to know that I'm "only" fourteen. My mother points this out often. I can make my own decisions when I'm old enough to vote, she says. Second, I should tell you that she's right -- I'm not always responsible. I sometimes take the prize for grade-A dork (呆子) .Take last weekend, for instance. I was staying at Dad's, and I decided it was time I learned to drive. It was Sunday morning, 7 A.M., and I hadn't slept well. I'd been up thinking about an argument, which I'll tell you about in a minute. Well, nobody was up yet in the neighborhood, so I thought it couldn't hurt to back the car out of the garage and drive around the block. But Dad has a clutch car. The R on the shift handle was up on the left side, right next to first gear(档位) . I guess you can guess the rest.
Dad's always been understanding. He didn't say, "Okay, little Miss Know-It-All, you can just spend the rest of the year paying this off," which is what Mom would have said. Instead, Dad worried about what might have happened to me. And that made me feel more guilty than anything. I think he'd be a better number-one caregiver, but I can't say things like that to Mom. To her, I have to say, "But Mom, Dad's place is closer to school. I could ride my bike."
To which she replies, "Amy Lynn, you don't own a bike. Remember? You left it in the yard, and it was stolen. And you haven't got the patience to earn the money to replace it."

68 The writer's mother thinks the writer is _________.
A. too attached to her dad B. too emotional
C. too shy D. irresponsible
68. In the first sentence, the writer used "only" to suggest that she _________.
A. doesn't want to grow old B. thinks fourteen is old enough for some things
C. wishes she were older D. thinks fourteen is an embarrassing age

Is a mouse that can speak acceptable? How about a dog with human hands or feet? Scientists, the people who know how to make such things happen, are now thinking about whether such experiments are morally right or not.
On Nov. 10, Britain’s Academy of Medical Sciences launched a study on the use of animals with human materials in scientific research. The work is expected to take at least a year, but its leaders hope it will lead to guidelines for scientists in Britain and around the world on how far they can go mixing human genes into animals in search of ways to fight human diseases.
“Do these constructs (构想) challenge our idea of what it is to be human?” asked Martin Bobrow, a professor of medical genetics at Cambridge University and chair of a 14-member group looking into the issue. “It is important that we consider these questions now so that appropriate boundaries are recognized.”
Using human material in animals is not new. Scientists have already created monkeys that have a human form of the Huntingdon’s gene so they can study how the disease develops; and mice with livers (肝) made from human cells are being used to study the effects of new drugs.
However, scientists say the technology to put ever greater amounts of human genetic material into animals is spreading quickly around the world --- raising the possibility that some scientists in some places may want to go further than is morally acceptable.
Last year in Britain there was a lively debate over new laws allowing the creation of human-animal embryos (胚胎) for experiments. On one side of the debate were religious groups, who claimed that such science interferes with nature. Opposing them were scientists who pointed out that such experiments were vital to research cures for diseases.
The experts will publish reports after the end of the study, in which they will give definitions for animal embryos with human genes or cells, look at safety and animal welfare issues, and consider the right legal framework to work within.

You are walking along a lane and never know what you will find. It might be a shop selling oil paintings, or a place where you can buy Dutch cheese. One thing is for sure, you will end up by a canal.
Welcome to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.
The year 2014 will be a good time to explore Amsterdam as the city has a lot to celebrate: the famous canal ring will turn 400 years old. Amsterdam will also celebrate the 160th birthday of Dutch painter of the Van Gogh museum, home to the biggest collection of the artist‟s colorful works.
The famous canal ring is a trademark of the city. With more than 100 kilometers of canals, it is no wonder that Amsterdam is called the „Venice of the north‟. But unlike the Italian town, where boats were originally used for transport, the canals in Amsterdam were mainly used for defense in the 17th century. Today ferries on canals offer a different way to explore the city.
But to truly experience Amsterdam, you can‟t miss the city‟s historic museums and monuments, among which Van Gogh museum is the most famous one. It holds 200 paintings, 700 letters and 500 drawings by the artist. Another famous museum is Anne Frank‟s house. Anne Frank became famous around the world because of a diary she left explaining her and her family‟s experience as a Jewish girl during World War II, hiding out in a house hoping that she would not be captured by German Nazis.
Amsterdam is small enough to walk or cycle almost anywhere, but it is rarely dull. Best of all it combines its glittering past with a rebellious edginess.

We don’t know how different our future will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use
computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet----even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today----we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more pollution environment. But it isn't true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as our health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
