A
Everyday, 340 million people speak it. One billion people are learning it and it is said that by 2050, half of the world’s population will be using it. What are we talking about? That global language—English.
The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built up when German. Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common language for communication.
Today it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Ireland as well as many islands in the Caribbean . Many other countries and regions use it for politics and business, for example, India. Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines. English is also one of the official languages of Hong Kong.
But global advertising and pop music mean that in most countries, you will see or hear some English. Thanks to McDonalds, we all know about "burgers". "fries" and "milkshakes". Songs by Madonna, Britney Spears and Celine Dion are in English. We can sing along, even if we do not understand what we are singing!
English is a messy (杂乱的) language. Every year, dictionaries include new words that talk about popular culture, for example, computer-related words such as "blogging", "download" and "chatroom". Also included are words that teenagers use. Who does not know "cool", "OK" and “hello” ?
Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like "cafe" and expressions like "c'est la vie" (that is life) are all part of the English language. On the other hand, the French language includes English words like "le weekend" and "le camping". German words are also part of English. Words like "kindergarten" come from the German language.
Recently, British people have become interested in "yoga". But the word comes from an ancient Hindu language in India.

B
In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地),four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must do much reading. Finally, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There are no shortcuts to success in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is not much learning by heart long
lists(一览表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language.
If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “learn through use.” Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.
51. The most important things to learn a foreign language are _____.
A. understanding and speaking B. listening, speaking, reading and writing
C. writing and understanding D. memorizing and listening
52. Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks it very badly. This is because _____.

53. One can never learn a foreign language well by _____.
A. doing much practice B. studying the dictionary
C. learning through use D. using the language
54. Which is the most important in learning a foreign language?

population will be using it.

It is not much learning by heart long lists(一览表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on.
This is because _____.

studied in Harvard University for four years and now was returning to London. In Joan’s e-mail, she requested Mary to look for a flat in London for her. As she had limited amount of money at her command, the flat had to be relatively cheap, but it had to be modern, with public facilities such as elevators, gas lines available. It had to be in the eastern part of London, with petrol and subway stations nearby. It didn’t need to be large but about 100 square meters. Though Mary clearly knew it was almost impossible, she still went from one block to another, looking for a flat that would meet Joan’s requirements. Having tried too many times in vain, Mary went up to her boss and politely asked him for advice. It so happened that the boss just had such a flat for rent, so they quickly reached an agreement. But to her disappointment, when she e-mailed Joan, telling her the good news, Joan said that she was not returning and she had decided to continue to study in the university for her PhD.
What do you think of the two friends? If you were Mary, what would you do? If you were Joan, what should you do? What’s wrong with Joan? Think about it and give your answer.

An epitome of American culture
The United States of America is an immigrant county with all kind of races from all over the world, such as Africans, Asians, Europeans and South Americans, with the Indians its natives. Because of it, the USA is a country with colorful but special culture, in which English is a good example.
The British had ruled America for over 300 years so the English play an important role in USA and becomes its only official language. If someone asks who do say only one language, the answer must be Americans. But the language differs from area to area in USA, for most of Americans have strong accent but less dialect. You can recognize Americans and know he is southeastern (one speaks a bit slow but clearly)or northeastern (one speaks quickly) by their accents. You also can tell them from Englishmen by the words and phrases which they use. Take the followings as an example, if you hear an English-speaking person says “would you like to my flat for diner tonight?”, but not says: “would you like to my department…?” he may be an English but not American.
In the modern time the USA play a most important part in the international affairs and many people regard American English as the standard English. Believe it or not, many people retell what the Americans say and try to learn a mouthful of American accent!
American English is an epitome of American culture which shows The USA is tolerant, easy-going, but commanding! Unit two English around the world

Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia, some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud burp after you finish
eating. Burping would show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a big burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please”.

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have seven or eight children, of
whom four or five lived till they were five years old and up. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until
sixty.
This important change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on
women’s economic (经济的) position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married their school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more afterwards return to fuller part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage (婚姻), with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
46. We are told that in a family about 1900__________ .
A . few children died before they were five
B. seven or eight children lived to be more than five

D. four or five children died when they were five

A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves
B. does not like children herself
C. needn’t worry about food for her children
D. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty
48. Many girls are now likely to __________.
A. give up their jobs for good after they are married
B. leave school as soon as they can
C. marry so that they can get a job
D. continue working until they are going to have a baby
49. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to __________.
A. stay at home after leaving school
B. marry men younger than themselves
C. start working again in life
D. marry while still at school
50. Now a husband probably __________.
A. plays a greater part in looking after children

Save the Animals
Animals are natural resources(资源) that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers(羽毛), for food, for sport, and simply
because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth
forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food.

Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before yon leave home for a feast(宴会),have a small, low-fat snack(小吃). This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods. Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them. Choose lean meat(瘦肉 ).Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruits. They don’t have fat content as cream and chocolate. Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess(过多的) calories.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore (不理睬) everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达)of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To maintain (保持) a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.
This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, not when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel-listening is the key factor to communication. 51. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children. A. more difficult B. easier
C. more uninteresting D. more interesting
52. The main idea of the second paragraph is __________. A. the importance of friendship B. to make your feeling known to others C. the importance of communication D. the disagreement between generations
53. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that __________. A. children should always obey their parents B. they should be equal
C. parents play the leading part
D. both make the opposite know their feelings 54. The example in this passage proves that ___________. A. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to her B. Sophie is very polite to her parents C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late
D. communication is the solution(解决办法) to misunderstanding 55. All the following statements are correct except “_______”. A. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing C. If you are not able to communicate, walk away D. Communication is a two-way deal (C)
When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Wee k by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear
all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes. He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.
56. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter’s complaint? A. He told her not to pay any attention to what her“enemy” had said. B. He criticized (批评) her and told her to overcome her shortcomings. C. He told her to write down all that her“enemy” had said about her and pay attention only to the things that were true. D. He refused to take the list and have a look at it. 57. What does “Week by week her list grew” mean? A. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.
B. She had made a list of my shortcomi ngs and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer.
C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on. D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious. 58. Why did her father listen to her quietly? A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s “enemy” said was mostly true.
B. Because he had been so angry with his daughter’s shortcomings that he wanted to show this by keeping silent
points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures(文化)? Or should we worry about the dangers of 'mono-culturalism', a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary(相反), I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)...
If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), will it kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. "The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it's like a rose," he said, "But who would ever want their garden just full of rose?
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don't necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that 's fine by me.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early ” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

New Zealand is an English-speaking country, but the government recognizes another
language, too. This is the Maori language. English sailors began to visit New Zealand after 1770. They found the Maoris, a dark-skinned people, living there. They had come from islands in the Pacific Ocean 400 years before the 14th century.
For a long time the British Government was not very interested in these faraway islands. It was made a British colony in 1840. In this year the first British people came to settle in the new country. More and more settlers came from Britain later.
The Maoris were friendly to the first settlers. But soon the new settlers wanted the Maoris’ land. So in 1844 there was a fighting between them. This was the first of several wars between the two peoples. The next fifty years was very bad for the Maoris. Many were killed in the wars. Many more died from new diseases brought by the British. In 1840 there were perhaps 200,000 Maoris. By 1896 this number had fallen to 42,000.
For many years, the British New Zealanders looked down upon the Maoris. Since last
century the two peoples have lived in peace. They have equal rights and the Maoris language is one of the languages of the country. Today there are about a quarter of a million Maoris, that is, about 9% of the population. Most of them live in North Island. They have a rich culture and a great love of singing and dancing.
40. How long did it take the British Government to make New Zealand its colony after the English
