Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein (矿脉) of gold ore (矿石) disappeared! The pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again, but they found nothing.
Finally, they decided to quit. They sold the machinery to a man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. That man asked a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer said that the project had failed because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines (裂纹线)”. His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found.
The man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to ask for expert advice before giving up.
R. U. Darby was struggling for years to pay back the money from his relatives and neighbors. He went into the business of selling life insurance.
Remembering that he lost a huge fortune because he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited from the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself, “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say ‘no’ when I ask them to buy insurance.”
Darby is part of a small group of fewer than 50 men who sell more than a million dollars in life insurance every year. His “stickability” comes from the lesson he learned from his “quitability” in the gold mining business.
4. Darby and his uncle stopped digging for gold because ______.
A. they didn’t have the machinery to dig for the ore
B. they didn’t have enough money to manage the mine
C. they had tried to find the vein of gold again, but in vain
D. they had already gotten lots of gold from the ore and made big profits
5. What was a good quality of the man who worked on the mine after Darby and his uncle?
A. He knew the machinery well.
B. He knew the importance of seeking expert advice.
C. He had very strong stickability and never gave up.
D. He was good at calculations and familiar with fault lines.
6. What happened to Darby in the end?
A. He became a very successful businessman.
B. He worked as an ordinary salesman selling life insurance.
C. He lived an easy life with all the money he had earned from the gold.
D. He struggled for the rest of his life to pay back the money he had borrowed.
7. What is the main message that the author intends to convey with the story?
A. One is never too old to start a new career.
B. Never give up and you will succeed eventually.
C. It is important to have knowledge about everything.
D. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you are in need.
Imagine a stranger walking past you on a cold, rainy day. “Lovely weather, isn’t it?” the stranger says. Do you laugh, or even smile? If not, you may not have a dry sense of humor.
British people, and particularly the English, are well-known for our dry sense of humor. We often say the opposite of what we mean in order to be funny, and tell jokes in a tone of voice that makes it sound like we are being completely serious. As US writer Julian Tan put it on the HuffPost Students blog: “It is as if it is ‘Opposite Day’ every day in Britain.”
If the people of Britain are known for having a “stiff upper lip” and not showing emotion, then our dry sense of humor shows this through jokes. Often it will take a long time or several beers, to get a British person to tell you what they actually think about something and get behind the wall of humorous sarcasm (讽刺) that they have in front of them.
English comedian Ricky Gervais put it like this: “We play jokes on our friends. We use sarcasm as a shield (护盾) and a weapon. We avoid being serious until it’s absolutely necessary.”
It can be annoying and confusing if you haven’t been raised with these types of jokes: “Why did he just say such a ridiculous thing? Is he making fun of me?” But it is also true that understanding this type of humor is a good way to make friends with people in the UK, even if you don’t find it funny.
It’s important to remember that the person telling the joke may actually be making fun of himself or herself, not you. One of the characteristics of British humor is “its strong theme of self-deprecation” (making fun of oneself), according to Tan. So don’t worry – often, English people, and British people in general, just want to make fun of themselves!
8. According to the passage, we can know that someone with a dry sense of humor can ________.
A. not use sarcasm as a shield and a weapon.
B. not make friends with people in the UK
C. pretend to play jokes on their friends
D. say funny things in a serious way

10. The underlined phrase “stiff upper lip” in Paragraph 3 refers to a quality of _________.
A. remaining calm
B. communicating feelings
C. taking a positive attitude

After moving to the United States, immigrant groups trying to fit in tend to choose high-calorie, fatty foods in an attempt to appear more American, a new study finds. That's one reason why immigrants approach U.S. levels of obesity within 15 years of moving to America.
The researchers also did an experiment that measured whether or not the threat of appearing un-American influenced respondents' food choices. After being questioned about their ability to speak English, 75 percent of Asian-Americans identified a typical American food as their favorite. Only 25 percent of Asian-Americans who had not been asked if they spoke English did the same.
When their American identity was called into question during a follow-up study, Asian-American participants also tended to choose typical American dishes, such as hamburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, over more Asian fare. In that experiment, 55 Asian-Americans were asked to choose a meal from a local Asian or American restaurant. Some participants were told that only Americans could participate in the study. Those who chose the more typical American fare ended up consuming an extra 182 calories, including 12 grams of fat and seven grams of saturated fat(饱和脂肪).
"People who feel like they need to prove they belong in a culture will change their habits in an attempt to fit in," said Sapna Cheryan, an author of the study and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington. "If immigrants and their children choose unhealthy American foods over healthier traditional foods across their lives, this process of fitting in could lead to poorer health," Cheryan added.
Social pressures, the study concluded, are at the heart of the problem. “In American society today, being American is associated with being white. Americans who don't fit this image even if they were born here and speak English feel that pressure to prove that they're American,” said Cheryan.
12. According to the survey, ________.
A. Asia-Americans care less about their health
B. 25 percent of Americans like junk food
C. choosing food is related to Asian-American’s situation
D. immigrants are forced to eat junk food
13. The underlined word “fare” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________”.
A. food offered as a meal B. a person taking a taxi
C. money spent on food D. an arranged thing to do
14. Sauna Cheryan thinks that ________.
A. what immigrants have done is ridiculous
B. American traditional foods are healthier
C. immigrants risk their health in order to fit in
D. American culture affects immigrants deeply
15. Which of the following should take the blame for the bad eating habit?
A. The situation of employment. B. The traditional culture.
C. The American government. D. The pressures from society.
