阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A ★
For years, he had difficulty saving to buy a house because something would
always happen and use more money. Although he made efforts, he simply could not go long before spending the extra money that he had saved.
Then one day a car accident badly damaged the car his wife was driving. The
repairs might cost them five thousand dollars. Unfortunately, they were now in debt (债务) and so the car would have to wait. He realized that they needed a solution to their money problems. He worked long and hard for weeks, saving and managing his money in a way he had never done before. In a few months he had saved enough money to have his wife’s car repaired.
Once the car was repaired, he discussed with his wife how quickly they had put
aside the money they needed. During their discussion his wife encouraged him to open a second account (账户) so they could continue to put away the same amount of money that they were saving every week for the car repair. This money would go
towards the house they had always wanted to buy.
In a little over a year he saved more than twenty thousand dollars and was able to
make the down payment (首付款). He did something in a short while that he had failed to achieve in his previous attempts.
This man’s experiences gave him a different feeling about money. He and his
wife have continued to keep their second account. This time they have decided to start saving for their retirement, putting away just a little less every week than they did for their house.
One man developed a new set of good qualities because he had a goal that was
important for him to achieve — he made a plan to achieve it and followed through. The experience of a single bad luck taught him a valuable lesson and challenged him to plan his saving, and spending habits again. In the process he also changed his family’s life. He now enjoys the material benefits (好处) along with a sense of success and pride.
56. What trouble did the writer have at first? A. He couldn’t buy a new car for his wife.
B. The money he made couldn’t meet the needs in life. C. His wife was seriously injured in a car accident.
D. He couldn’t save enough money to repair the dam-aged car. 57. After the car was repaired, what advice did the man’s wife give him? A. He should work longer and harder than ever. B. He should challenge himself to make more money. C. He should change his habit of making money. D. He should save some money every week for the house. 58. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Saving money is necessary and important. B. One dollar saved is one dollar earned. C. A good living habit leads to success. D. Bad luck sometimes means a chance in life.

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration. All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony. Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a piece of advice, “I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she offered. “Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”
The husband agreed. So each of them tried to think of the things that annoyed them about the other and wrote down what they came up with. The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.
“I’ll start,” offered the wife. She took out her list. It had many items on it, enough to fill three pages. In fact, as she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband’s eyes because he never thought that he had so many shortcomings.
The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband. “Now, you read your list and then we’ll talk about the things on both of our lists,” she said happily.
Quietly the husband stated, “I don’t have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect. I don’t want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn’t want to try and change anything about you.” The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.
In life, there are enough times when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don’t really have to go looking for them. We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time in this world looking for the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us and see the wonderful things before us? 36. Why were there tears in the husband’s eyes when the wife read his annoyances? A. Because he had no courage to face his shortcomings.

There is no question that teenagers need rules, which is often not a difficult thing for parents to give. What can be more challenging is giving teenagers their freedom. It can be difficult to draw the line between the two. However, some issues cannot be changed by discussion and require firm rules. For instance, rules should be established concerning driving the family car.
I will admit that I have no problem coming up with rules. To me they make life easier and they leave no room for questioning. What can be more difficult, however, is giving my teens their freedom. I guess there are really two primary reasons for this. One is that sometimes I am afraid to give them freedom. The second is that I’m not always so sure what the freedom should be.
It helps that I have a husband with whom I can discuss these problems. We talk about be more unwilling but we know that there comes a time when we really do have to learn how to let go of the reins (缰绳) a bit.
If we try to make life have nothing but rules, we are more likely to see our teen’s rebelling (反抗). They need to know that while we do have certain expectations, we also trust them to begin making their own choices and decisions. How else can they do that unless they are given the space and room to do it?
It’s really all about balance and I will be the first to admit that it can be a challenge to carry out. However, it is a necessary part of growing up. Yes, teens definitely need rules but they also need freedom.
39. According to the first paragraph, it is difficult to decide . A. whether the children need rules
B. whether the children should be given freedom C. how much freedom should be given to children D. what issues require non-negotiable rules
40. According to the writer, only rules without freedom will make the children . A. strong-willed B. rebellious C. weak D. independent 41. Which of the following is true according to the text? A. Rules are difficult to make for parents. B. Rules and freedom are similarly important.
C. We should give children freedom as much as possible. D. Rules are more important than freedom.
42. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to? A. Problems. B. Children. C. Rules. D. Reasons.

Lack of exercise is considered a risk factor for cancer. There is considerable evidence that inactivity is connected with increased risk for lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.
In the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, more than 32,000 people (25,000 men and 7,000 women) were given a preventive medical examination that included a machine exercise test to measure physical fitness. They were given a physical fitness score, with one being the lowest and five being the highest fitness level. Then these people were followed for an average of 8 years. During this time, 179 men and 44 women died of cancer.
Data from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study show people have lower rates of cancer with higher levels of physical fitness. Studies from the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas suggest that men with high fitness levels are less likely to die of cancer.
The Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study also found that fitness level was more important than weight in predicting longevity (长寿). While results showed that fitness and normal weight are the ideal combination, researchers found that men who were fat but performed well in the machine performance had just a slightly increased all-cause death rate, including cancer, compared to the more slim men. The fat, but fit, men particularly lived longer than the slim, but flabby (肌肉松弛的), men.
These statistics called for a warning to the overweight: The first health goal for the overweight should be to become as fit as possible at their current weight. 43. The text mainly talks about A. the effect of exercise on reducing chances of cancer B. how to lose weight effectively C. different ways to keep slim D. fat men live longer than slim ones 44. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The study on the life of the overweight.
B. The study on the relationship between taking exercise and cancer. C. The study on the ways of losing weight.
D. The study on the effects of machine exercise.
45. People with are more likely to die of cancer according to the text. A. slim body B. normal weight C. low fitness levels D.constant machine exercise 46. Which of the following is NOT true according to Paragraph 4?
A. Fitness levels have more effects than weight on people’s longevity. B. A man who is fit and has normal weight is most likely to live longer. C. Slim men are more likely to live longer.
D. Fat people who like exercising are also likely to live longer.
47. The author thinks the most important thing for the overweight is to A. increase their fitness levels B. choose to eat vegetables C. be on a diet D. ask for help from doctors

The benefits of keeping a journal (日志)
If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for
years. Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal. ◆ It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later
because you didn’t write it down? But then I developed the habit of writing down
every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If I’m away from my computer, I
usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the
idea to the journal in my computer.
◆ It helps you review all the lessons (教训) you’ve learned. By reviewing your journal,
you can quickly see the lessons you’ve learned and the ideas you’ve gotten. You
can use the ideas to propel (鞭策) yourself forward.
◆ After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far
you’ve gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw
ideas you had in the past might have been realized today.
◆ It helps you expand (扩展) your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to
express an idea, you are thinking actively about it. At the end, you will expand
your ideas.

They say a difficult exam can help students in find out where they are weak in their studies and improve our learning methods. However, others were against a difficult exam. In their opinion, if it is very difficult, they may become discouraging and feel terribly about their studies. I prefer an exam either too difficult nor too easy. A very easy exam makes it difficult for teacher to learn how we are getting on to our studies, while too difficult an exam makes us lose heart.

The Winter Palace was built between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. Unfortunately, Elizabeth died before the palace was completed and only Catherine the Great and her successors were able to enjoy the great interior (内部) of Elizabeth’s home. Many parts of the palace’s impressive interior have been remodeled since then, particularly after 1837, when a huge fire destroyed most of the building. Today the Winter Palace, together with four more buildings arranged side by side along the river embankment, houses the extensive collections of the Hermitage. The Hermitage Museum is the largest art gallery in Russia and is among the largest and most respected art museums in the world.
The museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great bought a collection of 255 paintings from the German city of Berlin. Today, the Hermitage boasts over 2.7 million exhibits and displays, a diverse range of art and artifacts (手工艺品) from all over the world and throughout history (from Ancient Egypt to the early 20th century Europe). The Hermitage’s collections include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, a collection of Rembrandts and Rubens, many French Impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne, Monet and Pissarro, and several works by Rodin. The collection is really worth a stop for all those interested in art and history. The experts say that if you were to spend a minute looking at each exhibit on show in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years before you’d seen them all. However, we suggest you choose a guided tour instead!

This sense of total discomfort that you‟re both feeling is pretty normal. And I don‟t say that to in any way reduce your problems. I just don‟t want you to think that you‟re the one person in the world who‟s stuck with a neurotic (神经质的) mom. Think about it: for most of the past 14 years, you have depended on your mother for every little thing you‟ve ever needed. Now suddenly you‟re putting up all sorts of boundaries because you‟re growing out of being that little kid who needed her for everything, and it‟s hurting her feelings. What we need here is a little understanding and some new rules to take into account the changes you‟re going through. You can‟t just stop sharing things with your mom. It‟s mean.
So why not ma. And after consistently doing this for about a 隐私) — maybe there are certain those topics, you will completely let her know. And follow up on it!
The bottom line is that you guys need to build a new relationship based on the young woman. The only way to do this is to work through some really uncomfortable moments and big fights and then come up with a solution, which is what you‟re doing now. So don‟t worry — it‟s all going to be okay. But it will take some work, honesty and communication to get there.
Having a good relationship with your mom is a really important thing. She‟s the one person who will always be on your side.
