Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he/she likes worrying things. They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born. Zoos are places where different kinds of animals are kept and shown for the public. At most modern zoos people can see, smell and
hear animals in their natural way. Some zoos even have “friendship
farms" where people can touch some of the animals. Here are some
why people need zoos.
Firstly, zoos help people know more about animals and their
They give interesting information about each animal,
where it comes from and how it lives. Special teachers at the zoo help children understand more about the animals. Trained guides show visitors around the zoo.
Secondly, zoos are working hard to find out more about animals. New knowledge leads to better ways of looking after animals in the zoo and 54 understanding of the same animals
in the wild.
Thirdly, zoos play a part in protecting animals and stopping them from together with each other to help the animals in danger. For example, gorillas (大猩猩) from Taronga Zoo were sent to live with gorillas at the Melbourne Zoo in the hope that they would give birth to babies gorillas can be kept in this way.
Finally, zoos give people a lot of fun. People enjoy getting close to animals 57 having to cross the plains (平原) of Africa or climb the mountains of China. In the past, animal shows were common in zoos. Visitors were when they saw monkeys in human clothes, and they even took rides on elephants or horses. However, today people prefer to see animals in a more natural way.
So a modern zoo is a place where animals are well taken care of.

More than forty years ago, a group of artists gathered to
develop a television program. They planned to make a
television show that would teach young children about
subjects like reading and math in a fun way.
Sesame Street was first shown on TV on November 10th,
1969. It was produced by a group called The Children’s

Traveling Museum Exhibitions
In the past, if a person wanted to see the national treasures of a country, one had to go there in person. Therefore, very few people were able to enjoy some of history’s most important and interesting artifacts (手工艺品). This has changed with an increase in the number of traveling museum exhibitions.
King Tutankhamen Artifacts
A traveling exhibition of artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamen, popularly known as “King Tut”, toured the United States from November 1976 to April 1979. The 55 objects were shown in six cities and were seen by around eight million museum-goers. The second touring exhibit was started in 2007, this time with 130 artifacts and stops in London and three different American cities. However some objects, like the king’s golden face mask, are too valuable or too delicate to be transported long distances, so “replicas” (exact copies of something) are on show.
Japanese Color Woodblock Prints
The Art Museum at University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia, has an extraordinary collection of Japanese color woodblock prints (木刻版画). These prints document the period from about 1850 to 1900, a time when Japan was opening itself to Western influences. Before this point, Japan was a closed society that had little communication with the world outside of its borders. These works of art beautifully show the feeling of change and the trend toward modernization. The museum has put together a traveling exhibition of 60 of these prints, which can be borrowed and exhibited worldwide for periods of eight weeks or more.
Face-to-face with “Lucy”
One of the world’s most famous archaeological (考古学的) finds in history are the 3.2 million-year-old bones of a 106-centimeter-tall female found in the Ethiopian desert in 1974. Lucy, a name given to her by the discovery team, is a “hominid”, or a creature that scientists believe is the earliest ancestor of modern human beings. Rarely is an artifact this valuable allowed to travel widely, but Lucy has been taken to several museums in the U.S. while a detailed replica remains at the Ethiopian Natural History Museum.
56. What do we learn about King Tutankhamen’s artifacts?
A. The artifacts were shown in London first.
B. The artifacts were on show in the United States once.
C. The second touring exhibit showed more artifacts than the first one.
D. The king’s golden face mask was also shown in the traveling exhibitions.
57. What do the Japanese woodblock prints show about the society from 1850 to 1900?
A. Japan had little communication with other countries.
B. The whole country refused changes in the society.
C. Japan was opening itself up to Western ideas.
D. Japan achieved modernization.
58. Who is Lucy according to the passage?
A. An archaeologist.
B. The ancestor of modern human beings.
C. A 106-centimeter-tall female who died in 1974.
D. The first woman who visited the Ethiopian desert.

(Published March 30, 2011)Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity might have a few mistakes—and Jake Barnett has set out to prove it. Between attending college classes at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and tutoring his fellow students, Jake is also working on a new theory about the creation of the universe. He happens to be 12 years old.
From an early age, Jake showed an extraordinary interest in stars. When he was 3, his parents took him to a space observatory. He tried to learn as much as he could about astron¬omy. Jake’s IQ measured remarkably high at 170.
As a baby, Jake was found out with Asperser’s syndrome, a form of autism (孤独症). Autism causes difficulties in communication and social abilities. People with au¬tism may also have strong interests—like Jake’s interest in the stars at a young age.
The symptoms of autism can range from mild to extremely severe. Asperser’s is one of the milder forms of autism. Sometimes people with Asperser’s, like Jake, develop extremely advanced skills in science, music or art.
When Jake was in elementary school, his parents worried that the effects of his Asperser’s were worsening. He became quiet. And he was withdrawing from people. So a doctor recommended that Jake’s parents let him study more advanced subjects, like math and physics.
Jake’s mother asked an astronomy professor to let Jake sit in on his class. Now, Jake studies advanced sciences like electromagnetic physics at IUPUI.
But Jake thinks it’s important to have a normal life too. He likes to play Guitar Hero with his
friends and watch science fiction movies. He also enjoys playing classical music on the piano. But for Jake, studying physics is the most important thing. Jake’s professor, John Ross, is working on get¬ting a large sum of money for him to do research at the university.
Doctors have said Jake’s autism symptoms have lessened over time. Still, Jake proudly refers to himself as an “Aspy”, or someone with Asperser’s. In an interview with his uni¬versity student newspaper, he said, “I think the autism is the reason I’m even at IUPUI.”
59. What did Jake want to do at IUPUI?
A. Get a degree in astronomy.
B. Put forward his own theory in physics.
C. Become an Albert Einstein in the future.
D. Teach his fellow students Theory of Relativity.
60. Which of the following is the correct order of the events that happened to Jake?
a. He set out to disprove Einstein’s theory.
b. He was interested in astronomy.
c. He began to study math and physics.
d. He was found out with a mild form of autism.

A. he was unable to help others

Scientists have produced new evidence suggesting eating lots of red and processed meat damages health. They found big meat eaters had a raised risk of death from all causes over a 10-year period. In contrast, a higher intake of white meat was associated with a slightly reduced risk of death over the same period.
The US study, based on more than 500,000 people, found those whose diet contained the highest proportion (比例) of red or processed meat had a higher overall risk of death, and specifically a higher risk of cancer and heart disease than those who ate the least.
People eating the most meat were eating about 160g of red or processed meat per day— approximately a 6oz steak. Those who ate the least were only getting about 25g per day— approximately a small piece of bacon. Just the opposite, those who ate the highest proportion of white meat had a lower risk of overall death, and a lower risk of fatal cancer or heart disease than those who ate the lowest proportion.
Meat is a major source of saturated (饱和的) fat, which has been associated with breast and colorectal cancer. In addition, lower meat intake has been linked to a reduction in risk factors for heart disease, including lower blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. The latest study adds to a growing body of research linking high red and processed meat consumption to an

Travel Arrangements
TRAVEL STUDY-- a new way to spend your holidays. Have you ever heard about it?
● TRAVEL
When you have a travel study, you can see Big Ben, Sydney Opera House, the Statue of Liberty and many other places.... I dreamed of visiting all the cities with beautiful sights. During the travel study, you may go travel yourself, with your family or your friends.
At the same time when you travel, you are in a different culture every day. You can be served with different new foods and make new friends. You read all these from books in the past, but now it is
real and you are a part of it. Besides, you may also learn other cultures from your new friends because they are from different countries.
●STUDY
Maybe you already have foreign teachers in your school to teach you English. But he or she will not stay to speak English with you all the time, right? During the travel study, you have to speak it every day and almost everywhere because you are in an English-speaking country!
It also gives you a chance to let you live alone and make you learn how to live. What should I do if I lose my way in a foreign country? How can I buy what I want with my poor English? You have to be clever and you decide them by yourself.

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”
That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better.
Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is.
When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.
With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.
You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy, such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it.
The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling.
One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.
If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you’ll really see! 34. Which of the following can be the best title of the story?
A. Touching by Feeling B. To See or to Feel
C. To See Better by Feeling D. Ways of Feeling
35. When people buy things in shops, they often ______.

Without planning tourism can cause problem. For example, too many tourists can crowd pubic places that are also enjoyed by the people there. If tourists create too much traffic, the people there become angry and unhappy. They began to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy (经济). It is important to think about how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the culture and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should be also helpful for the health and happiness of local people.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads, and other support facilities (设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a large hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers (下水道) to waste and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

A. It is very important to develop tourism. B. Building roads and hotels are necessary.
C. Support facilities are highly important. D. Planning is great important to tourism.
39. Too much tourism can cause all the problems except ______.
A. a bad effect on other parts of the economy B. a change of tourists’ behavior

40. Not enough tourism will ______.
A. have more people out of work B. lead to fewer tourist attractions
C. make the support facilities cost more money D. cause the prices to rise and the pay to fall
41. The word “” in the last paragraph most probably means “______”.
A. get in B. pick up C. carry away D. take down
D
I came to study in the USA a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I injured (伤害) in an accident, because after the accident I had to see a doctor --- and to court (法院).
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $ 200 for what he had done. I was very surprised. He had good reason to me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible (负责) for my injury. I’d have to have a good lawyer (律师). And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another, yet he charged me $ 115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $ 215.
My lawyer knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided not to ask for him again. And he made me pay him $ 770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Because of my inexperience, I told the insurance company (保险公司)the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time, and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship or honor. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.
42. The writer’s roommate offered to help him because ______.
A. he thought it was a chance to make some money
B. he felt sorry for the writer
C. he knew the doctor was a very good one
D. he wanted the writer to have a good lawyer
43. A good doctor is necessary for the writer to ______.
A. be properly treated
B. talk with the person responsible for the accident
C. become healthy before he leaves America
D. finally get the responsible party to pay for his injury
44. The word “ in this passage means “______”.
A. be responsible B. be careful C. ask as a price D. get an answer
45. What can you get from the story?
A. Going to court is something very common in America.
B. Money is more important than other things in the USA.
C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides.
D. One must be very careful while driving a car.

Have you ever noticed how busy our roads are becoming? Every year more and more cars are using them. Already in such countries as America, almost every family has a car. Many accidents happen because cars are now made to travel very fast. Also, people waste time and money every day as long lines of cars move slowly into towns and cities. In most big towns it is very hard to find parking spaces.
Wide, smooth(平的), straight(直的) roads must be built now in place of the old and narrow roads. These roads must not pass through towns and cities. They must not be crossed by other roads.
Today such roads are being built in many countries in the world. These roads have at least two lanes, one for slow-moving traffic and the other for fast-moving traffic.
These roads do not pass through towns and cities, horses and bikes are not allowed on them. Accidents do not usually happen. Cars can travel hundreds of miles without having to stop.
But these modern roads often cannot be built in towns and cities. Before a road in a town can be made wider, many buildings have to be pulled down.
Some people feel that more car-parks should be built outside a city, then the drivers should leave their cars and catch a bus or take a taxi to their offices.

Part 1 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice) (每小题:4 分)
Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog. In 1913, the United States government introduced a bold, new nickel. James Earle Fraser said his goal was to design a coin that would be "truly American." In his search for symbols, he found none more distinctive than the American buffalo. Choosing to show a Native American on the other side of the coin, Fraser said the new nickel had "perfect unity of theme."
Production of "Buffalo" or "Indian Head" nickels began in February 1913. A single coining press at the Philadelphia Mint (造币厂)
started turning out the nickels at the rate of 120 a minute. But after the first examples were introduced, The New York Times said they were "bad."
Other critics said that the coin's "rough" surfaces would encourage counterfeiters (造假币的人). But the most serious complaint about the nickel had to do with its inability to stand heavy use. One coin collectors' magazine predicted that the slightest wear would remove the date and the words Five Cents "beyond
understanding."
In 1938, the Government staged a competition for a new nickel picturing Thomas Jefferson. According to a news item of the day, the Department of Indian Affairs didn't receive a single complaint from Native Americans about the design change. Collectors didn't seem to mind either.

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Time passed and my cards sold well. My enthusiasm for the
greeting card business grew quickly. All along, I had been drawing fantasy art: monsters, dragons, castles, etc. With the birth of my first son in 1980, the content of my work went through a pretty dramatic change.
Fantasy went out of the window, and I began to illustrate reality. In the spring of 1983, we, The Mary Engelbreit Greeting Card
Company, took our 12 little designs to New York to exhibit them at a national card show.
I remember how big the show was. I just couldn't get over it. I had no idea there were so many different card companies. And it was exciting because our 12 little cards were getting a lot of attention in that huge place!
I've been told one of the reasons we had so much success at that show is because my card style was different than anything else at the market. I typically draw complicated details and use deep colors and funny or meaningful quotations.
By 1985, many greeting card publishers started noticing my art, and two of them approached me with licensing contracts.
I have always believed if you choose a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life. If you ask about the mystery of my success, all I can say is this: to imagine is everything!

focused on ________.

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. In the early days of sea travel, seamen on long voyages lived exclusively on salted meat and biscuits. Many of them died of
scurvy (坏血病), a blood disease which causes swollen gums, livid (铅色的) white spots on the flesh and general exhaustion. On one occasion, in 1535, an English ship arrived in Newfoundland with its crew seriously ill. The men's lives were saved by Iroquois Indians (易洛魁印第安人) who gave them vegetable leaves to eat. Gradually it came to be realized that scurvy was caused by
something lacking in the sailors' diet. Captain Cook, on his long voyages of discovery to Australia and New Zealand, established the fact that scurvy could be warded off by the giving fresh fruit to the sailors.
Nowadays it is understood that a diet which contains nothing harmful may yet result in serious diseases if certain important
elements are missing. These elements are called "vitamins". Quite a number of such substances are known and they are given letters to identify them, A, B, C, D, and so on. Different diseases are associated with a lack of particular vitamins. Even a slight lack of Vitamin C, for example, the vitamin most plentiful in fresh fruit and vegetables, is thought to increase our chances of catching colds. The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruit and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say, during the extended periods of religious fasting (斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to supply the missing vitamins.
11.
Which of the following happens because of scurvy?
A. People become hungry.
B. People lose blood.
C. People become livid.
D. People feel pain in their gums.

In the deserts of North Africa and Saudi Arabia lives the smallest of all foxes with the largest of ears. This animal is the fennec fox.
Fennec foxes have ears that are 5 to 6 inches long. That‘s big for an animal that weighs less than four pounds. Their ears help shed(去除)body heat. And, as you may have guessed, they also provide great hearing.
It‘s also interesting to think about the hair of fennec foxes. Why would a fox that lives in the desert need a thick, fur coat? Actually, the desert isn‘t always warm. During the nighttime, a desert can be terribly cold! A fennec fox‘s fur keeps them warm during those desert nights. They also have long bushy tails that they use as a blanket. And the hair on their feet protects them from the hot sand in the daytime.
Fennec foxes live in small communities of dens(兽穴).They spend most of the day sleeping in their dens, out of the hot sun. Then, when night comes, they come out in search of food. In addition to their great hearing, fennecs also use their great sense of smell and big eyes to track down dinner.
Like other foxes, fennecs are omnivores. This means they eat both meat and plants. They like eating birds, eggs, insects, snails, fruit and leaves best.
Fennec fox mothers have one to five babies at a time. The lifespan of a fennec fox is 10 to 12 years. The cream coloration of fennec foxes help them blend into their desert habitat. Still, they have to watch out for predators(捕食性动物). These include caracals ( a type of wild cat ) , jackals, eagle owls, hyenas and humans. Humans catch them for their fur and to sell as pets. 表格填词练习六
