I didn't cry when I learned l was the parent of a mentally handicapped child. I just sat still and didn't

say anything.

When Kristi was old enough, we sent her to a kindergarten. It would have been comforting to cry the

day I left her in that room full of kids. Kristi had spent hour upon hour playing by herself, but this moment, when she was the "different" child among them, she was probably the loneliest.

However, positive things began to happen to Kristi in her school, and to her schoolmates, too. Kristi's

classmates always took pains to praise her: "Kristi got all her spelling words right today." No one bothered to add that her spelling list was easier than anyone else's.

Later, she faced a very special challenge. The final event of the term was a program based on a final

outcome of the year's music and physical education activities. Kristi was behind in both. My husband and

I dreaded the day as well.

On the day of the program, Kristi pretended to be sick. Desperately I wanted to keep her home. Surely

missing one program couldn't matter_ But my conscience wouldn't let me off that easily. So I practically got a pale, reluctant Kristi onto the school bus.

Just as I had forced my daughter to go to school, now I forced myself to go to the program. At the

kindergarten, I felt worried because of her slow and clumsy reactions, she would surely hold up her team.

The performance went well until it was time for the sack race. Surely Jenny would find it tough. Now

each child had to climb into a sack, hop to a goal line, return and climb out of the sack. I noticed Jenny

standing near the end of her line of players.

But as her turn to join, a change took place in her team. The tallest boy behind Kristi placed his hands

on her waist. Two other boys stood ahead of her. The moment the player in front of Kristi stepped from

the sack, those two boys grabbed the sack and held it open while the tall boy lifted Kristi and dropped

her into it. A girl ahead took her hand and supported her. Kristi gained her balance. Then off she hopped,

smiling and proud.

At the cheers of teachers, schoolmates and parents, I silently thanked the warm, understanding people

in life who make it possible for my disabled daughter to be like her fellow human beings. Then I finally cried.

41. When sending her daughter to the kindergarten, the writer must have felt _

A. lonely B. cheerful C. worried D. scared

42. What does the underlined sentence imply?

A. It didn't matter to miss one program because it was not important.

B. It gave the author a good excuse not to send Kristi to the program.

C. Kristi's illness prevented her from taking part in the program.

D. The teachers wouldn't blame Kristi for she was ill.

43. What does Paragraph 6 & 7 mainly tell us?

A. The writer was worried about her daughter's performance.

B. The sack race is very difficult for the kids at the kindergarten.

C. The writer was unwilling to go to watch the program.

D. All the kids performed well in the games except the sack race.

44. The author expressed her gratitude mainly because

A. her daughter Kristi won the competition with the help of her teammates

B. her daughter's teammates helped her experience the happy feeling of her age

C. the teachers at the kindergarten arranged some teammates to help her daughter

D. the other kids' parents cheered for her daughter's good performance

45. What's the best title of the passage?

A. The day I cried B. An unforgettable experience

C. My disabled daughter D. A warm-hearted teamwork

It all began with a stop at a red light.

Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006 . While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.

―Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal.‖ Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered(纠缠)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.

―What do you want to do?‖ her mom responded. ―Sell our house?‖

Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager. Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Eventually, that’s what the family did. The project —crazy, impetuous (鲁莽的) and utterly inspiring — is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: ―The Power of Half.‖ It’s a book that, frankly, I’d be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it. An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know your whole family is out on thestreet.

At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference — for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help. In a column a week ago, it described neurological (神经生物学的)evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens’ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

Mr. Salwen and his wife, Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to, so the family members spent more time around each other.

A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendlyhouse.

25. What does the underlined word ―inequity‖ most probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A. Unfairness. B. Satisfaction.

C. Reasonable statement D. Personal attitude.

26. What does the underlined sentence ―Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.‖ means? ______

A. Don’t respond to a child's demands firmly without consideration.

B. Unless a child is realistic, never give an answer immediately.

C. Give an answer if the child is reasonable.

D. Never give a quick answer to an idealistic teenager.

27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The Salwens regretted selling their house.

B. The relationship between the family members of the Salwens is much closer.

C. Small houses can bring happiness.

D. The Salwens intend to buy another big house.

28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

C

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣). Others say that competition is bad; that itsets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which only values the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.‖ What is not usually admitted by them is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.

Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear beginsto dissolve(缓解)can we discover a new meaning in competition.

29.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Competition helps to set up self – respect.

B.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

C.Failures are necessary experiences in competition

D.Opinions about competition are different among people.

30.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A.It improves personal abilities. B.It builds up a sense of duty.

C.It pushes society forward. D.It encourages individual efforts.

31.The underlined phrase ―the most vocal‖ in Paragraph 3 means ___________.

A.those who try their best to win

B.those who value competition most highly

C.those who are against competition most strongly.

D. those who rely on others most for success

32.Which point of view may the author agree to?

A.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

B.Competition should be encouraged.

C.Winning should be a life – and – death matter.

D.Every effort should be paid back.

"A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website" is the definition of "selfie" in the Oxford English Dictionary. In fact, it wasn't even in the dictionary until August of last year. It earned its place there because people are now so obsessed with (对……痴迷) selfies ─ we take them when we try on a new hat, play with our pets or when we meet a friend whom we haven't seen in a while.

But is there any scientific explanation for this obsession? Well, you should probably ask James Kilner, a neuroscientist(神经系统科学家) at University College London.

Traffic jams cost average Beijinger $1,126 annually

By Meng Jing (chinadaily.com.cn)

Beijingers(北京人) lost as much as 7,972 Yuan on average to traffic jams last year, the highest in the country, said a report.

Published by Didi Kuaidi, China's largest ride-hailing application and its partners, the report revealed Beijingers on average spent 52 minutes travelling 19.2 kilometers daily between their home and office. The cost ranged between 7,972 yuan and 6,324 yuan per person in the four cities whose residents are among the best paid employees in China.

Research based on data collected on Didi Kuaidi's online platform showed that not only those in mega cities suffered from poor traffic conditions.

B

It all began with a stop at a red light.

Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006 . While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.

―Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal.‖ Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered(纠缠)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.【浙江省名校协作体2016高二联考英语】

A. Mercedes Coupe is only an ordinary car which is quite cheap.

B. Unselfishness has nothing to do with people’s primary satisfaction.

C. Hannah asked her parents to do something charitable and they sold their house.
