A
When he was 12 years old, the boy made a decision. He only later realized it probably hurt his teacher. He was, after all, a kid. But in time, when he was older and wiser, he wanted to find this teacher and apologize (道歉). But the teacher seemed to have disappeared.
In the past ten years, the boy, Larry Israelson, often turned to the Internet, typing the teacher‟s name into search boxes. He never found anything. But he never stopped looking. Last month—by now nearly 39 years after the event happened—he got a hit.
Excited, he started reading a story I had written in The Oregonian about a program that helps kids. He studied a photo and found his teacher, who was a volunteer. He then emailed me and asked me to introduce him to the teacher, James Atteberry.
I got in touch with Atteberry. He agreed to talk to his student. Shortly thereafter, I received a package with an envelope in it. I immediately took it to Atteberry.
As James Atteberry read the letter, he was brought back to 1973, when he was a history teacher in Huntington Beach. In the letter, Larry said, “I am truly sorry for leaving your seventh grade class during the 1972—1973 school year. I don‟t have many memories from school, but at the top of my exercise-book you wrote „You will go far in life.‟ Looking back on my younger self, I was proud to be your student.”
When it comes to apologies, no one gets a pass. Everyone needs to receive one, and everyone needs to give one.
21. How long did Larry spend looking for his teacher on the Internet?
A. For 39 years. B. For 12 years. C. For 10 years. D. For 2 years.
22. What did Larry feel sorry for?
A. Not finding the teacher earlier. B. Forgetting many school things.
C. Not finishing his homework. D. Leaving the teacher‟s class.
23. What‟s the writer‟s conclusion in the passage?
A. Students should apologize to their teachers.
B. The earlier you apologize, the better the result is.
C. One must apologize for every mistake he has made.
D. Everyone has to apologize and receive apologies in life.
B
Sports, drama, and all kinds of organizations keep students busy during high school. Where do they get the money to do these things? Not everyone gets it from parents. Most have to work for at least some of the money to pay for these activities. Some adults question if high school students should have jobs. I say yes, they undoubtedly should.
Some people worry that teens with after-school jobs will have difficulty finding time for schoolwork. Actually, having a job helps teens make better use of their time. Many jobs take only a couple of hours on weeknights. According to an article, 86 percent of high school students have
an after-school, weekend or summer job and students who work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the school year get higher grades than those who do not work at all. Instead of considering working after school a hindrance, it should be looked at as real-world education.
Other people think that work adds too much stress(压力), which may be somewhat true, but whether having a job or not, there is always stress. Better to learn how to deal with busy schedules(日程表)in a controlled environment like high school than to be out on your own and alone in the future, experiencing stress for the first time. I personally would be worried about the teenager who has to become independent without having any experience of working.
The biggest reason teens should work is that it is a healthy way of making money. There are many things teens need to pay for and they cannot do it if they don‟t have a job. Not all parents can pay for these activities. My dad told me, “Having a job is a good way to save up for things you are going to need or want to do. You get a lot more out of things if you pay for them yourself.” The sooner kids make money, the sooner they can learn how to use money wisely. If they are not allowed to work in high school, they may have a hard time in the future. Teens should, without a doubt, be allowed to work on school nights.
24. The word “hindrance” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.
A. something that encourages teens to study
B. something that helps teens improve study
C. something that prevents teens from studying
D. something that makes teens lose interest in study
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Teens are too busy with study to work at high school.
B. Teens experience stress for the first time at high school.
C. Teens are worried about being independent in the future.
D. Teens who work will deal with stress better in the future.
26. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Working makes teens get lower grades.
B. Working teaches teens to spend money more wisely.
C. Working helps teens to get on better with their parents.
D. Working stops teens from taking part in after-school activities.
27. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. What money means to teens.
B. Why teens should work after school.
C. Whether parents should help teens find jobs.
D. How teens get money for after-school activities.
C
You eat to stay fit and keep your body working, right? Then reading is food for your mind and soul. Reading informs you of what‟s happening around. Reading encourages you to think and imagine, think out of the box and imagine the impossible.
In the past, people just read books, only books. Today, we have books online, which makes You can lie in bed with a book, but with a computer you possibly can‟t. No matter how you read, reading is important.
Remember those bedtime stories? We read fun facts about animals, plants and the universe. We ask “whys” and “hows”. In books, we find their answers. Children who are introduced to reading at an early age are seen to have a better understanding of phonics (语音学). They master language skills easily, have a richer vocabulary and have greater reading abilities. Children, who grow up reading good books, mostly stand out. The way they think and act is very different from those who have never been introduced to reading. Reading not only adds to their knowledge but also shapes their personalities. Reading has a great influence on one‟s life. Teenagers are easily influenced by whatever they read. If inspirational stories and life experiences are read in one‟s teens, they can change a person for the better. They stay with him and keep encouraging him to achieve his goals and choose the right against the wrong.
The more you read, the more creative and imaginative you will become. Reading develops vocabulary, improves language skills and sharpens your problem-solving abilities. It leads to a better understanding of self. Reading gives you knowledge, it makes you more confident. The more you read about others‟ lives and experiences, a better decision-maker you will become.
Reading about the importance of reading should lead you to read more, and more, and more. So choose a book you like and don‟t stop reading until you reach the end. And even after that read as much as you can.
28. Which of the following is true?
A. Children should start reading at a young age.
B. Parents should tell their children stories every day.
C. Teenagers should think and act differently from others.
D. Students should find answers to their questions in books.
29. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means ______.
A. reading books is no longer a pleasure to people
B. reading books is less interesting than reading online
C. reading online can‟t take the place of reading books
D. reading online can‟t be difficult for people
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. More teenagers read online now.
B. What teenagers read builds their future.
C. What children should learn first is phonics.
D. More practice makes reading easier.
31. What‟s the best title for the passage?
A. Why Is Reading Important?
B. What Should Teenagers Read?
C. How Is Reading Ability Improved?
D. When Should Children Start Reading?
D
"Earworms", some people call them. Songs that get stuck in your head go round and round, sometimes for days, sometimes for months. For no clear reason you cannot help yourself from humming or singing a tune by Lady Gaga.
To a psychologist, the most interesting thing about earworms is that they show a part of our mind that is clearly outside of our control. Earworms arrive without permission and refuse to leave when we tell them to. They are parasites (寄生虫) living in a part of our minds.
If you have got an earworm you can suffer an attack of it simply by someone mentioning the tune, without having to hear it. This proves that earworms are a part of long-term memory. Humans have an "inner ear", for remembering phone numbers, for instance. When it gets infected with earworms, rather than review our plans for the day, or lists of things to remember, the inner ear gets stuck on a few short bars of music or a couple of phrases from a song. A part of us that we normally do not have to think about, that should just do what we ask, has been turned against us, upsetting us with a request that we never asked for. The mind is an inner world which we do not have complete knowledge of, or have control over.
Fortunately psychology can provide some advice on how to deal with an uncontrollable mind. Consider the famous "don‟t think of a white bear" problem, which tells you to try not to think about white bears, or to do something else, to avoid both thinking of the white bear and not thinking of the white bear. For earworms, the solution may be the same. Our inner ear has become infected with an earworm. This is a part not under our control, so just sending in instructions to "shut up" is unlikely to be of much help (and has been shown to make it worse). Much better is to employ the inner ear in another task. If your mind is poisoned by Brittany Spear‟Toxic, for instance, then try singing Kylie Minogue‟s Can‟t Get You out Of My Head. Let me know ifworks!
32. According to the passage, earworms are ______.
A.songs that keep going round in our mind
B.worms that live in a part of our brain
C.tunes by pop singers like Lady Gaga
D.parasites clearly under our control
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

B.Earworms are used for keeping long-term memory.
C.Humans do not have complete control over their mind.
D.You won‟t suffer from earworms unless you hear the song.
34. What does “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

B.“Don‟t think of the white bear” problem.
C.Kylie Minogue‟s Can‟t Get You out Of My Head.
D.Using the earworm-infected inner ear in another task.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
