Many years ago in another country there lived a poor student. He had very little money. He lived in a very small room over a restaurant. His room was at the back of the building over the kitchen. The restaurant owner was a very mean (吝啬的) man. Nobody liked him. But he was good at cooking and many people came to his restaurant.

One day the restaurant owner was working quietly in his kitchen when he heard the poor student talking to his friend by accident.

― You must be very unhappy,‖ said his friend, ― living in a poor room like this.‖

― Oh no,‖ said the student, ― I am busy with my studies and I am not interested in my room.‖ ― But you only eat rice – you don‘t have money for anything tasty.‖

― Yes, it‘s true, I eat only rice. But the delicious smells that come from the kitchen make the rice very tasty indeed.‖

The restaurant owner was angry on hearing this. This student was stealing his smells from his kitchen. He decided to take him to court (法庭).

Everybody in the court laughed when the mean man accused(控告)the student of stealing his smells. But the judge took him seriously. ― Every man should be able to complain to the court,‖ he said.

When the restaurant owner told the judge everything, the judge said, ― You are right. The student is guilty (有罪的). ‖ The restaurant owner was very pleased, but the poor student was very much afraid. What could he do? He had only a few coins in his pocket.

The judge asked the student if he had any money. The student took 5 coins from his pocket and held them out to the judge in his right hand.

― Let the coins fall into your left hand,‖ said the judge.

The courtroom was very quiet. Everyone heard the light ringing sound of the coins as they fell into the student‘s left hand.

Nowadays people are making themselves beautiful in Korean ways.

―Thank goodness you have double eyelids(双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money,‖ said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost all the white people have, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.

I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. Everywhere I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics(整形诊所) and advertisements with South Korean women ---tall, thin, with milky skin, long legs, nice big eyes and perfect noses. I found that South Korean beauty meant looking as ―white‖ as possible.

Cosmetic surgery has a kind of magical attraction to women---the promise of beauty. Women are often sure that suffering and sacrificing(牺牲) is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. This suffering is not for

nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to a better-looking child and a better life.

Appearance is starting to play a bigger role in work places. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and very tall, gets more job chances than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, though both of them came from the same college, had the same good marks in their studies. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.

93. How many South Koreans are born with double eyelids?

Most of us have never thought about building an educational toy by ourselves. If we need a learning toy or something, we simply go to the nearest store and buy it. However, things are not as easy in third world countries. With families even having no food to put on the table, buying toys, especially the educational ones, is the last thing on the parents‘ minds.

So how can one get these kids interested in science? This was a question that worried the Indian engineer Arvind Gupta so much that he decided to give up a good job and spend his life making toys from trash, things that people no longer want or need!

Mr. Gupta began teaching in the 1970s. While still an engineering student at the Indian College of Technology, he volunteered to teach the children who could not afford to go to school. Upon graduation, he found a good job at India‘s Tata Motors and spent the next five years designing cars.

But he soon realized that this was not something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a year‘s training course and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program whose aim was to make science fun and exciting for poor children using available materials.

Mr. Gupta found the whole project so satisfying that he decided to leave his high-paying job and focus his attention on designing educational toys that were not only cheap and easy to build, but are also full of scientific principles(科学原理), so that children could get interested in this interesting subject.

When the Internet started becoming a more widespread learning tool, Mr. Gupta created a Toys from Trash website and also recorded over 250 YouTube videos.

Today, over 50,000 children and teachers visit the website daily to download the videos for the toy creations based on cool science. Some young children have become so inspired (鼓舞)that they have even won international science competitions with the help of his creations.

93. What are these educational toys made from?

If you dropped a piece of fruit on your computer keyboard, would you think about

eating it again? What if you dropped it in the toilet? Bacteria (细菌) can live

everywhere, even in some unexpected places.

If you eat at your computer, sneeze on your keyboard, or sit down to surf the

Internet without first washing your hands, your computer keyboard could be bad for

your health. According to the US National Research Centre, the average computer

carries 400 times more bacteria than a toilet bowl (抽水马桶).

Could one of the dirtiest things in your home be right in your hand? Yes: the TV remote control. It gets dropped on the floor, put on the sofa and everyone in the house holds it. Scientists found that around half of the tested remote controls carry the cold virus (病毒).

Don‘t forget your toothbrush. Do you put it in the bathroom? Studies show that flushing (抽水冲洗) the toilet releases (释放) bacteria in the air. Bacteria can remain in the air for at least two hours. They may pollute your toothbrush. You can find ways to solve this problem. Try to keep your toothbrush far from the toilet. Make sure that it is in an upright position after each use. It‘s also important to change your toothbrush every three months.

Here are some other places to watch out for:

At home

The kitchen is one of the places with the most bacteria—more than the bathroom. Dishcloths and kitchen sponges (海绵) are great places for bacteria since they are always wet after being used. Try to make them dry.

At school

When you put your schoolbags on the floor or in the bus, many bacteria can live on the bottom (底部) of it. Try to clean your schoolbag often.

In public places

Escalator handrails (电梯扶手), shopping cart handles (推车手柄), public books and magazines are top bacteria carriers. That‘s why the first thing to do when getting home is to wash your hands.

Yes, bacteria are everywhere. But don‘t be too afraid to touch those things. Most of bacteria are harmless. Just remember to wash your hands regularly. It is the most useful way to protect yourself from bacteria and viruses.

93. Where can bacteria live?

Can animals be made to work for us

Can animals be made to work for us ?Some scientists think that one day animals be trained to do a

number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings.

They point out that at a circus(),for example ,we may see elephants ,monkeys, dogs and other animals

doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on television or in a film.if you watch closely ,you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward .the scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them .

Through this never-ending cycle, there is just as much water in this country now as there ever was .The amount ,however ,does not increase .our rapid population growth and our rapid agricultural and industrial expansion have caused our water needs to soar .By withdrawing water from streams too much waste too quickly,we have in some instances upset the balance of nature’s built-in renewal processes for conserving water .As a result ,some of our streams and and lakes have become “wet deserts”.There is still plenty of water in them ,but it is water so polluted that it supports no life at all .
