As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof(屋顶) and a sound downstairs. It was Santa Claus, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to the stairs. He hoped to take a look at the old man before Santa left for his next stop.

In Western society, especially in the English-speaking world, the chance for young people to see the other countries and experience life is considered important. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.
Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends.
Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.
A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.
Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world.
So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching English in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well(井) in a village in Africa.
These young people’s wish to explore the world is an expression of the values of the societies

Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison, also liked ice cream, and she often served it at the White House. Actually, a famous brand (品牌)of ice cream was even named after her. The Chicago Fire of 1871 was the worst disaster of the 19th century.
The fire is said to have started one evening in Mrs. O'Leary's barn (牲口棚)on the West Side of Chicago. Several hours after she milked her cow, it kicked over an oil lamp, and the cow started the fire. We do not know if the story is true, but we do know that the fire began in a barn on the West Side.
The fire spread quickly because of the wooden buildings, a strong wind, and a dry season. The fire lasted 27 hours and spread to all parts of the city. Other cities sent 25 fire companies to help put out the fire. Federal troops (联邦军队)were also used to help fight the fire and keep order, too. At last rain put out the fire.

People think of ice cream as an American food. Yet, ice cream really came from Asia. In the late 1200s Marco Polo, the great explorer, is said to have seen rich Asians eating dishes of ice. Camels had brought the ice from distant mountains. Before it was served, the ice had been flavored (调味)with fruits.
Marco Polo brought this new dish to Italy, In France cooks changed the ice recipe (配方)and made ice cream.
At first, cooks tried to keep the recipe a secret. They wanted it to be a special dish for rich people. By the late 1700s, though, ice cream was sold throughout Europe and America.
Some great Americans loved ice cream. George Washington was the first to buy a special machine for making it. When Thomas Jefferson returned from France, he brought an ice cream recipe home with him. Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison, also liked ice cream, and she often served it at the White House. Actually, a famous brand (品牌)of ice cream was even named after her.
In the late 1800s, the ice cream industry began to grow. A way of keeping ice cream frozen had been found, so ice cream makers did not have to worry about ice cream melting(融化)anymore.

Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries.Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food.Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from ―field to plate‖, is called ―food miles‖.A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer‘s field to the person who buys the food.Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者).Why is this, and what are the effects(影响) of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market so the food didn‘t have to travel very far.The consumers also did not travel very far, because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates(UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries.Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What‘s wrong with ―food miles‖? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons.First of all, because food travels such long distances.we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(全球的) warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty.Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journey. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer.Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food. 1.What is called ―food miles‖ according to this passage?
A.The origins of the food.B.The effects of long distances.
C.The journey from field to plate.D.The disadvantages of imported food. 2.The underlined word ―available‖ in Paragraph 2 most probably means ―______‖. A.easy to getB.not busy C.willing to talk D.impossible to get

Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved so much to learn that his parents let him go to Yale, Connecticut‘s only college.Noah graduated in 1778.He desired (渴望) to study law, but his parents didn‘t have more money to send him to school. So, in order to make a living, Noah taught in Glastonbury, Hartford and West Harford.Later he studied law.
Noah did not like American schools.Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed (挤满) into one room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained teachers.Their books came from England.Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books so in 1783.Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language.Mot people called it the ―Blue Backed Speller‖ because of its blue cover. For 100 years, Noah‘s book taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time.Ben Franklin used Noah‘s book to teach his granddaughter to read.
When Noah was 43, he started writing the first American dictionary. He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way.He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English.Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English color and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren‘t in English dictionaries like skunk and souash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah accomplished (完成) his dictionary in 1828, at the age of 70, the first American dictionary came out.It had 70.000 words in it. Noah did many things in his life.He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks, Americanized the English language, and edited magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843, he was considered an American hero.
