However, there are disadvantages brought about by telecommunications, such as phone bills for unnecessary talks, the disturbance of unwanted or wrong calls, and the attraction of hot-line services, etc. Yet by and large, telecommunications bring more benefit than harm to our life. By shortening distance, telecommunications enhance efficiency in our commercial activities, save time and money in promoting interpersonal relations as well as in acquiring knowledge and accumulating information. About 40 years ago, on the 3rd of March, Chairman Mao called upon the whole nation to“learn from Comrade Lei Feng and serve the people”. However, in recent years, with the development of market economy, great changes have taken place in our ways of thinking and modes of living. “To serve the people”has become a foolish and formalist slogan.

So far as I am concerned, I take sides with those who uphold the virtuous principle of serving the people whenever and wherever it is possible. In daily life, I am always ready to render service and to help everybody.

There are some voices claiming Lei Feng’s spirit has gone out of style in today’s society. They reason that in commodity economy people should seek more practical things, such as fame, money and the comfortable life. To them nothing is more important than those things, which is often regarded as the views of the present generation.
There are some other voices claiming that the spirit of Lei Feng still has an enormous echo in millions of Chinese people.
