Every person uses his own special words to show his ideas and feelings. Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years. Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is “Where’s the beef ?”. It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be. In the early 1980s, “Where’s the beef ?” was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it at that time.

Beef, of course, is the meat from a cow, and no food is more popular in America than a hamburger made from beef. In the 1960s, a businessman named Ray Kroch began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price. Kroch called his restaurant “McDonald’s”. Ray Kroch became one of the richest businessmen in America.

Other business people saw his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company called “Wendy’s” said its hamburgers were bigger than those sold by McDonald’s or anyone else. The Wendy’s company began to use the expression “Where’s the beef ?” to make people know that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy’s television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef.“Where’s the beef?”she shouted in a funny way. The advertisement for Wendy’s hamburger restaurants was a success. As we said, it seemed everyone began using the expression “Where’s the beef ?”.

Like most English children, I learnt French at school and I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand English. But when I went to America I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday without any language problems.

How wrong I was! The misunderstanding began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Danny a ring and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking like being lost and asked if he could help me.

“Yes,”I said.“I want to give my friend a ring.”

“Well, that’s nice,”he exclaimed (惊呼).“Are you getting married? But aren’t you a bit young?”

“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”

Like most English children, I learnt French at school and I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn‟t understand English.

“Well, that‟s nice,”he exclaimed (惊呼).“Are you getting married? But aren‟t you a bit young?”

“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I‟ve arrived. Can you tell me where there‟s a phone box?”

“Oh!”he said.“There‟s a phone downstairs.”

When at last we did meet up, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.“Don‟t worry,” she said to me.“I had many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from us British. You‟ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. But most of the time British and American people can understand each other!”

English words don‟t stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use, or old words are used in a new way.

English can be changed by borrowing words from other languages. The word “tomato” was borrowed from Mexico and“tea”came from China and so on. Now new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words are formed by adding two words together. “Countryside” and “earthquake” are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word “photo” was made from “photograph” by cutting off the end of the longer word. “Plane” was made by cutting off the front part of “airplane”. The names of people and products can become new words, too. Our “sandwich”was named after a man called

Sandwich and “sello tape”(透明胶带) was a name given by the company that first made the

product.

A.people use old words in a new way

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it. Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly with confidence and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to compose(创作) sentences that are grammatically(语法地) correct. Fourthly, we must know how to put sentences into paragraphs, so as to write a good letter or composition.

There is no easy way to success in language learning. A good memory(记忆力) is of great help but it is not simply enough to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning long lists of words and their meanings by heart. We must learn words not by themselves but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. “Learn through use.” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is very important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

Being shy keeps many Chinese people from getting to know westerners. You may feel nervous about making language mistakes in front of a native English speaker.

But remember, westerners living in Asia know how it feels to try to communicate in a foreign language. They have made many mistakes when speaking Chinese!

So don‟t worry about speaking imperfect English. The important thing is just to communicate. Start talking, and make some foreign friends!

Many westerners value(注重) their privacy(隐私). Don‟t be surprised if your new friend doesn‟t want to include you in everything he does. This may seem strange to Chinese who worry about that their friends will get lonely.

Chinese people often expect their good friends to give advice and take care of them in many ways. If you expect this kind of care from westerners, you may be disappointed. Why? Because most westerners value They feel insulted(侮辱的) if others think they can‟t take care of themselves. They will assume(假设) you feel the same way.

Of course, these tips(小提示) are just rules of thumb(经验之谈) and may not apply(适用) to all westerners. Each person you meet will have his or her own ideas about friendship. When you get confused(不明白), don‟t be shy and worry to ask questions. Your new western friends may also have many questions about Chinese culture, and they may be hesitant(犹豫) to ask. So encourage them to ask questions, too.

Be honest and open to your friends. Respect each other‟s differences. The friendships you make can be lifelong treasure both for you and your new friends.

English is spoken as the first language by most people in the U.S.A., Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. However, English is spoken all over the world. It is the main language in over 60 countries, including India, Singapore and many of the Caribbean and Pacific islands. In these places English is often the second language.

English is also an international language in many other countries, like China and Japan. People in these countries use it for business, and travelers to these countries use English when they want to communicate. Other people may learn English because they enjoy reading books in English, listening to British or American music or watching American films.

English has changed a lot over the years and still goes on changing. It is no longer right to talk about British English or American English if the speakers come or don’t come from those

countries. People in Japan and Korea, for example, may use the American spelling but may not sound like American.

English will probably be the most widely used language in the world by the end of the 21st century. This language no longer belongs to British, American or Australian speakers. It belongs to anyone in the world. So, as a middle school student today, think about how you can use this language. After you leave school, you will almost certainly need it.

As we said, it seemed everyone began using the

“Oh!”he said.“There’s a phone downstairs.”

When at last we did meet up, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.“Don’t worry,” she said to me.“I had many difficulties at first.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “ You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “ No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made

him clearly, he said , “ Yes , indeed, you speak very well.”In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t knowto say.

What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t a compliment ( 恭维)in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She , people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the have cooked are very delicious, you should say,“ Thank you .”

In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing , but in my opinion, being confident does being proud, so sometimes you should be you are modest and say , “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” , while working in a western country , the others may think that you really cannot do it . If you often say “No” , you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job , if one says something like “Yes , I can certainly do it ” instead of “ Let me have a try ” , he or she will get it . So in the west , you should be brave to show your self-confidence.

It is no longer right to talk about British English or American English if the speakers come or don’t come from those countries.
