How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments---mostly for entertainment purposes --- is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely and far from their natural homes.
Zoo claims to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leaves zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behaviour, intelligence, or beauty. Zoo keeps animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only m ention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars and bears spend 30 percent of their time wal king back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and another species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we still save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

It was a late Wednesday nig ht when the dreading phone call reached our home. I sat up, so I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom burst into tears. “Get the car Dean! Andrea has been in a car accident.”
We ran every stop sign on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched around every corner. We got to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Andrea. The next morning, after wearing masks, we were allowed to go to the ICU to see Andrea. Well, the least I could say was that everything was injured in her body and she lost all of her memories. It was a fatal accident.
Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house. I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself, her determined spirit was shining through. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea was able to come home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had tasks to accomplish, and no matter how hard it was, she stuck with them until t he job was done. Though busy with dealing with pain and therapy, she always found time to love and play with me.
I’ll never forget the impact that this incident made on my life. I admire her strong-willed personality and her determined spirit. Today she is perfectly normal, despite the scars and the pins holding her leg in place. I couldn’t ask for a better sister, hero, or best friend.

64.During the treatment, Andrea _______

Unlike the widely attended Summer Olympics, the Winter Games are almost a collection of wealthy athletes and nations. In fact, I’d suggest that the name of the Winter Games be changed. They could be more accurately branded the “The European and North American Expensive Sports Festival.”
Until as recently as 1994, fewer than a third of the planet’s countries took part. This year, in Turin, Italy, only 43 percent of the world’s total countries. Ethiopia, a nation of 73 million, will send its first “team” to a Winter Olympics this year – a single skier.
As always, the biggest teams, and the big winners, will come from a familiar pool. In the history of the winter competition, dating from its beginning in 1924, competitors from only six countries—including Norway, the United States, Austria and Finland, have won almost two-thirds of all the medals awarded. By contrast, the all-time list of summer winners is long and deep, extending to athletes from 143 countries.
It’s not just the presence or absence of snow and ice that determines Winter Olympics success, or even participation(参与). If it were, some of America’s best ice skaters and speedskaters wouldn’t live and train in Southern California or Florida. If it were, athletes from countries like Peru, Chile, Nepal, Moro cco, Afghanistan and Ethiopia – all with snow-covered mountains—would be fighting for the medals.
Instead, the more telling factors are economic. Would-be Winter Olympians need years of training, coaching and competition. Most nations, even those with plenty of snow and cold, simply can’t afford the equipment.
Unlike the Winter Games, the Summer Olympics level many of the advantages of national wealth, as well as favorable geography and climate. Athletes from the poorest African and Caribbean nations have developed into some of the world’s greatest athletes with little cost.
Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the fonder of the modern Olympics, recognized some of the global sporting unfairness more than a century ago. De Coubertin objected to the creation of a separate Winter Olympics for many years, dismissing winter sports in 1921 as “the play of the rich.”
66. We can infer that athletes in the Winter Olympics mainly come from ____________.
A.South America and North Europe B.Norway and America
C.Norway, Finland and Australia D.Europe and North America
67.The underlined word “extending” is close in meaning to _________.
A.to sp read B.to conclude C.to offer D.to award
68.Which of the following statements is Not True according to the passage?
A.The participation rate of the Winter Olympics is far less than 50%.
B.The host country of the recent Winter Olympic Games is Turin.
C.The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924.
D.Winners of the Summer Olympics come from almost everywhere.
69.We can infer that____________
A.Some athletes of the Winter Olympics from USA are trained in warm states.
B.It doesn’t snow in Peru, Chile, Nepal, Morocco, Afghanistan or Ethiopia.
C.Games in the Summer Olympics cost the participants a lot of money.
D.Baron Pierre de Coubertin was the founder of the Winter Olympics.
70.The best title for the passage would be _________.
A.The Unfair Winter Olympic Games

第二部分:阅读理解 (共25小题,每小题2分,合计50分)
A
I was in a charity shop looking at the second hand books. It just so happened that the book shelves were next to the toy section. After a few minutes I became aware of a group of women standing behind me. They were poorly dressed and spoke in what sounded like an eastern European language. As they looked through the clothes rails a little girl, about three years old, came over to the toy section. Immediately her attention was caught by a toy pram(婴儿车). What is it about little girls and toy prams? I don't know, but whatever it is its incredibly cute!
She spoke to her mother and, in halting English her mother asked the shop assistant how much it cost. Three pounds was the answer—about five dollars. The mum looked down at her child,
perhaps calculating what she still had to buy and how much money she would have left. Then she simply shook her head.
The child didn't react badly as some might. Being told “no” was obviously not a new experience for her. But she couldn't keep the disappointment from her face.
I had the grand total of four pounds in my pocket, two two-pound coins. A moment later I tapped the mother on the shoulder, pointed to the coins which I had left in the pram and said, "Buy her a dolly too."
I didn't hang about to see the end result. After all, it's not about being thanked. I made my way out of the shop and into the sunshine.
The money was an investment in the happiness of the world. Was there any better way, I
wondered, to get so much happiness for so little money than to buy a little girl a toy pram? And a dolly to sit in it!
21. What did the little girl say to her mother according to the second paragraph?

A. she thought the toy wasn‟t worth the money. B. she found it difficult to calculate her money.

23. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that _________ .
A. the girl usually behaved badly.
B. the mother usually treated her daughter badly.
C. the mother was not rich enough to meet her daughter‟s need often.
D. the little girl was often refused because she asked for too many toys.
24. What would the girl probably get finally?
A. Both a toy pram and a dolly B. Just a dolly C. Two two-pound coins D. Nothing
25. What words can be used to describe the author?
A. Optimistic and energetic. B. Pleasant and grateful
C. Wealthy and healthy. D. Sympathetic and helpful
B
On February 1, 1960, I met three of my friends at the North Carolina A & T College library in Greensboro, and together we walked the mile to Woolworth‟s.
At that time in the South, African Americans weren‟t allowed to eat with whites. Woolworth‟s had a separate lunch counter in the basement for “Negroes”(黑人). My friends and I had agreed that we would sit down at the white lunch counter and ask to be served. And we did just that. Immediately, spoons stopped halfway to people‟s mouths. Every eye was on us. Again, we asked the waitress for coffee and said it was a custom not to serve the black people. And I asked, “But you do agree that the custom is wrong, don‟t you?”
We were very polite----our goal was to make sure that people did the right thing. So we sat there, waiting. An angry policeman came in, and stopped right behind me. I could feel his hot breath on my neck as he stood over me. I said to myself, “This is it.” But he just stood there for a minute, and then backed away and started pacing up and down. I came to realize: he didn‟t know what to do.
A little old white lady sitting farther down the counter finished her sandwich and headed straight for us. I prepared myself for a blast(一阵and said, “Boys, I am so proud of you. I only regret that you didn‟t do this ten years ago.” That added to my determination to see it through.
We went back to that lunch counter every day for six months until African Americans were finally served in every restaurant.
26. What does the underlined word, “abuse” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. Great encouragement. B. Good praise. C. Unkind words. D. Direct advice.
27. Why did people focus on the author when he asked to be served?
A. Because he sat at the white people‟s lunch counter.
B. Because he asked for coffee, which wasn‟t served there.
C. Because he was very loud and was disturbed other people.
D. Because he was new to the Woolworth‟s restaurant.
28. Which of the following words best describes the author?
A. Strange. B. Kind-hearted. C. Courageous. D. Stubborn.
29. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?
A. The author‟s friends were disappointed with him.
B. The old lady was in support of the author.
C. The old lady called the policeman in to deal with the matter.
D. The author‟s friends stopped the matter from getting worse.
30. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The author‟s goal was to fight with white people.
B. The author was not satisfied with the service at Woolworth‟s.
C. The policeman was very rude and the author was afraid.

John Smith was a writer, who wrote detective stories for magazines(杂志), though he never dealt with criminals(罪犯). One evening he could not finish an end for a story. He sat in his study(书房), but he had no ideas. So he decided to go to the cinema.
When he came back, he found that he had had a visitor. Someone had broken into his house. The visitor had had a drink, smoked several of his cigarettes and had read his story. The visitor left him a note.
“I have read your story and I don‟t think it is very good. Please read my suggestions and you can finish it. By the way, I am a thief. I‟m not going to steal anything tonight. But if you become a successful writer, I will return.”
John read the thief‟s suggestions. Then he sat down and wrote the rest of the story. He is still not a successful writer, and he is waiting for his “visitor” to return. Before he goes out in the evening, he always leaves a half-finished story in his study.
