Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one篇一:阅读理解
In order to learn to be one’s true self, it is necessary to obtain a wide and extensive knowledge of what has been said and done in the world; critically to inquire into it; carefully to ponder over it; clearly to sift it; and earnestly to carry it out.
It matters not what you learn, but when you once learn a thing, you must never give up until you have mastered it. It matters not what you inquire into, but when you inquire into a thing, you must never give it up until you have thoroughly understand it. It matters not what you try to think out, but once you try to think out a thing, you must never give it up until you have got what you want. It matters not what you try to sift out, but when you once try to sift out a thing, you must never give it up until you have sifted out clearly and distinctly. It matters not what you try to carry out, but when you once try to carry out a thing, you must never give it up until you have done it thoroughly and well.
If another man succeeds by one effort, you will use a hundred efforts. If another man succeeds by ten efforts, you will use a thousand efforts.
Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities (死亡) have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life had been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, tsunamis, and other observable events resulting from earthquakes, rather than from quakes themselves.
The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering landmasses. The other extends from the East Indians to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.
This element of unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dead and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth's shell, variations in the earth's force of attraction, and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected.
It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.
Passage3
The accuracy of scientific observations and calculations is always at the mercy of the scientist's timekeeping methods. For this reason, scientists are interested in devices that give promise of more precise timekeeping. In their search for precision, scientists have turned to atomic clocks that depend on various vibrating atoms or molecules to supply their “ticking”. This is possible because each kind of atom or molecule has its own characteristic rate of vibration. The nitrogen atom in ammonia, for example, vibrate or “ticks” 24 billion times a second.
One such atomic clock is so accurate that it will probably lose no more than a second in 3000 years. It will be of great importance in fields such as astronomical observation and long-range navigation. The heart of this atomichron is cesium atom that vibrates 9.2 billion times a second when heated to the temperature of boiling water.
An atomic clock that operates with an ammonia molecule may be used to
check the accuracy of predictions based on Einstein’s relativity theories, according to which a clock in motion and a clock at rest should keep time differently. Placed in an orbiting satellite moving at a speed of 18,000 miles an hour, the clock could broadcast its time readings to a ground station, where they would be compared with the readings on a similar model Whatever differences develop would be checked against the differences predicted.

In communities north of Denver, residents are pitching in to help teachers and administrators as the Vrain school District tries to solve a $13.8 million budget shortage blamed on mismanagement. ”We’re worried about our teachers and principals, and we really don’t want to lose them because of this,” one parent sail. “If we can help ease their financial burden, we will. ”
Teachers are grateful, but know it may be years before the district is solvent(有综合能的). They feel really good about the parent support, but they realize it’s impossible for then to solve this problem.
The 22,000student district discovered the shortage last month. “It’s extraordinary. Nobody would have imagined something happening like this at this level,” said State Treasurer Mike Coffman.
Coffman and district officials last week agreed on a state emergency plan freeing yp a $9.8 million loan that enabled the payroll (工资单)to be met for 2,700 teachers and staff in time for the holidays.
District officials also took $1.7 million from student-activity accounts its 38schools.
At Coffman’s request, the District Attorney has begun investigating the district’s finances. Coffman says he wants to know whether district officials hid the budget shortage until after the November election, when voters approved a $212 million bond issue for schools.
In Frederick, students’ parents are buying classroom supplies and offering to pay for groceries and utilities to keep first-year teachers and principals in their jobs.
Some $36,000 has been raised in donations from Safeway. A Chevrolet dealership donated $10,000 and forgave the district’s $10,750 bill for renting the driver educating cars. IBM contributed 4,500 packs of paper. “We employ thousands of people in this community,” said Mitch Carson, a hospital chief executive, who helped raise funds. “We have children in the school, and we see how they could be affected.”
At Creek High School, three students started a website that displays newspaper articles, district information and an email forum(论坛)。 “Rumors about what’s happening to the district are moving at lighting speed,” said a student. “We wanted to know the truth, and spread that around instead.”

They stood outside the door – two children in shabby outgrown coats. “Any old papers, lady?”
I was busy, I wanted to say no – until I saw the snow on their clothes. And their thin little sandals (凉鞋) were also covered with snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
There was no conversation. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served
them cocoa and toast with jam to strengthen them against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household.
The silence in the front room got me to look inside. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Mercy, no! ”
I looked at my shabby sofa. The girl put her cup back in its saucer (茶杯托,茶碟) carefully.
“Your cups match your saucers.”
Her voice was old, which made me think she had been hungry for months. They left then, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said thank you. They didn’t need to. They had done more than that. Plain blue cups and saucers. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and looked at the meat. Potatoes and meat, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job – these things matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and tidied the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. I let them be. I want them there in case I ever forget again how very rich I am. 41.The author let the two children in .

Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most disastrous forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated (估计) that earthquake related deaths have numbered in the millions, and that earthquakes related loss has been beyond calculation (计算). The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to downfall of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, tsunamis (huge sea waves), and other observable events resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quakes themselves.
The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two particular areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering lands. The other Extends from the East Indies to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas. Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine (阿尔卑斯山) regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped people to prepare for and thus cut down the damage. Otherwise it might have been totally unexpected.

Sleep is a funny thing. We‟re taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to dir of stroke---probably as a result of an
underlying disorder that keeps them from sleeping soundly.
Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously short of sleep. It is not unusual for them to work 40 hours in a row without rest. They are not in the least worried about it, confident they can still deliver the highest quality of medical care. But an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person‟s motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is drunk. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence of alcohol is grounds for sacking often don‟t think twice about operating without enough sleep.
“ I could tell you horror stories, ” says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website for residents. Some are terrifying. “I was operating after being up for over 36 hours, “ one writes. “ I literally fell asleep standing up and nearly planted my face into the wound.”
“ Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work,” writes another. “I know of three who have hit parked cars. Another hit a „ Jersey gate‟ on the New Jersey Expressway, going 105km/h.”
“Your own patients have become the enemy,” writes a third, because they are “the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep.”
The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own. If you‟re worried about the people treating you or a loved one, you should feel free to ask how many hours of sleep they have had and if more rested staffers are available.
51 Sleep is a funny thing because ____________.
A. the longer one sleeps, the less sound sleep he gets
B. the more sleep one gets, the more likely a stroke occurs
C. many people stick to about eight hours of sleep to stay fine
D. many people who sleep six hours a night still feel energetic in the day
52 A surgeon who has worked 40 hours in a row without sleep ___________.
A. can still provide quality medical care
B. will remain alert because he is used to it
C. may ignore the potential risk of insufficient sleep
D. should be fired if he continues the medical operation
53 According to one resident, they are short of sleep because ____________.
A. they are too tired to fall asleep
B. they are forbidden to sleep at work
C. they are kept by treating their patients
D. they are too worried about oversleeping
54 They resident who hit a “Jersey gate” on the New Jersey Expressway must have
________.
A. fallen asleep
B. drunk too much
C. been driving too long
D. avoided hitting parked cars
55. Patients are now advised to __________.
A. monitor the hours of doctors by themselves
B. make sure that the doctors who treat them have had enough sleep
C. ask for legal control of the hours of doctors
D. allow their doctors to sleep several hours before the operation

Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related
fatalities have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, tsunamis (gigantic sea waves), and other observable events resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quake
themselves.
The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering landmasses. The other extends from the East Indians to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.
This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth‟s shell, variations in the earth‟s force of attraction, and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected.
It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their
destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better
understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.
56. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Earthquake destruction is declining
B. Earthquake forecast is improving
C. Man is no longer fearful of earthquakes.
D. Man is capable of conquering earthquakes
57. We can infer from the passage that quakes __________.
A. may happen anywhere at any time
B. mostly strike in oceans and mountains
C. are unobservable in masses of land
D. are hardly the direct cause of fatalities
58. The phrase “this element of the unknown” (Paragraph 3) refers to ___________.
A. the extension of earthquake zones
B. the percentage of earthquake occurrences

Passage 3
Very high waves are destructive when they strike the land. Fortunately, this seldom happens. One reason is that out at sea, waves moving in one direction almost always run into waves moving in a different direction. The two sets of waves tend to cancel each other out. Another reason is that water is shallower near the shore. As a wave gets closer to land, the shallow bottom helps reduce its strength.
But the power of waves striking the shore can still be very great. During a winter gale, waves sometimes strike the shore with the force of 6000 pounds for each square foot. That means a wave, 25 feet high and 500 feet along its face, may strike the shore with a force of 75 million pounds. During the most raging storms, the water a hundred fathoms (600 feet ) beneath the surface is just as calm as on a day without a breath of wind.
( D )1. According to the passage, destruction caused by high waves occurs ________ .
A. regularly B. always
C. predictably D. rarely

B. A typhoon 500 miles out at sea can stir up the ocean floor.
C. If high waves can strike the shore with a horizontal force of 75 million pounds, the
vertical force of such waves can have an even greater effect upon the ocean floor.
D. A submarine commander navigating his vessel at a depth of 700 feet will not be affected by araging
surface storm.
Passage 4
In Western countries people have been using the installment plan since the first half of the twentieth century. Today, a large number of families in Great Britain buy furniture, household goods and cars by installments.
The price of an article bought on installments is always higher than the price that would be paid by cash. There is a charge for interest. The buyer pays one quarter or one third of the price as a down payment when the goods are delivered to him. He then makes regular payments, weekly or monthly, until the full price is paid up. The legal ownership of the goods remains with the seller until the final payment has been made.
Installment buy has advantages and disadvantages. It can help couples with small incomes to furnish their homes and start housekeeping. It increases the demand for goods, and in this way helps business and employment. There is, however, the danger that when business is bad, installment buying may end suddenly, making business much worse. This may result in a great increase in unemployment. If the people on the imstallment plan lose their jobs, they will probably not be able to make their payments. If great numbers of people are bot able to pay their installment debts there is a possibility that businessmen cannot collect their debts and will therefore lose money. If businessmen lose money or fail to make a satisfactory profit, it becomes more likely to have a depression. This is why, in some countries, the government controls the installment plan by fixing the amount of the down payment and each of the following installments to discourage people from buying more than they can pay for on the installment plan.
( B )1. Which of the following is NOT true about the installment plan?
A. A lot of British families use the installment plan.
B. More than 10 percent American families buy things on installments.
C. Americans depend more on installment than British people do.
D. Americans spend one tenth of their income on installment buying.
( C )2. Goods bought on installments are more expensive than goods bought by cash because
________ .

Passage 5
sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that's not what I did.
I chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts( 文科 ) university that doesn't even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren't studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them.
I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering "factories" where they didn't care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist ( 人文学者 ) all in one.
Now I'm not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal-arts
courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile ( 协调 ) engineering with liberal-arts courses in college. together they threaten to confuse, the struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.

Passage 7
Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that writer."
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer ( 自由撰稿人 ), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test-even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
( B )1. This passage is meant to ________ .

D. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.
( A )3. why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?
A. He hadn't seen a change for the better.
B. He wasn't able to produce a single book.
C. He wasn't able to have a rest for a whole year.
D. He found his dream would never come true.
( A )4. "…people who die wondering: What if?" (Para.3) refers to "those________ ."

Passage 8
Man's first real invention, and one of the most important inventions, because there are no wheels in nature-no living thing was ever created with wheels. How, then, did man come to invent the wheel?
Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the dead body of a heavy animal through the forest on logs more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.
It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker to imagine two thin slices of log connected at their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did yet be much lighter and easier to handle. Thus the wheel and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.
