The Scarlet Letter
《The Scarlet Letter》written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel concerns souls.Everyone has his own soul.Someone defends his soul,someone does damage to it,even there are people who lose their own souls.In consequence,this world is filled with human stories in thousands of postures.
“A” is the first letter of the alphabetic which means the beginning of one thing.However,inn Christians‟ tradition, the beginning indicates deprivation and original sin that no one can get rid of.According to the Bible,we are all the seed of Adam.Nevertheless,Adam and Eve were punished by Jehovah for their stealing to eat love forbidden fruit.Owing to this,we,who are the descendants of Adam and Eve,are born guilty.In Puritans‟ eyes,Hester Prynne is a dissolute and immoral woman.They take Hester into custody just to show the dignity of God. So foolish people they are!An ugly woman cries:“This woman has brought shame upon us all,and ought to die.Is there not law for it? Truly there is,both in the Scripture and the statute book.”(2009:56)From this description,we can easily find that people there are so indifferent that they seem to be captivate by the church. We see,Hester is so common a woman who is dying for love and does not want to be forced to compromise to reality.“She had dark and abundant hair,so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam,and a face which,besides being beautiful from regularity of
feature and richness of complexion,had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes”.(57)Hester is such a good woman that she shows great love to her beloved--Mr Dimmesdale.This religious entanglement of emotions is difficult for people who have no religion belief to understand.I am such a person who can not understand.Religion has been part of the Westerners‟s life and it must be very painful to leave the religious life.But I do not have a religious experience, so it is hard for me to understand the hero's psychology. These are the obstacles for me to understand the novel and I find it hard to overcome it.
Hester‟s abundant emotions are not only indicated in her enthusiasm for love, but also her devotion to life, her utmost care for her daughter,and indomitable struggle against appress.Apparently,she submits herself to the adjustment and bears a lot to carry on her life.However,she keeps struggling with the puritanism inwardly.Here, in chapter 18,we can see the vivid words:“She and wandered,without rule or guidance,in a moral wilderness;as vast,the gloom of which they were now holding a colloquy that was to decide their fate.Her intellect and heart had their home,as it were,in a decent place,where she roamed as freely as the wild Indian in his woods.”(215)She insists that things she does with Mr Dimmesdale are pure.Hester lives in a small town,swallowing humiliation and bearing a heavy load,not that she wants to atone for her crime,but that she shows her resistance against puritanism.
Then,I would like to give some of my analyses upon the symbolism of the word „A‟.First, the most important one,A indicates the great Affection between Hester and Dimmesdale.She could escape from that place, but she is brave enough to face the reality and bear the sufferings on her own.Luckily,her warm heart wins people‟s acceptance.So,here, "A" is a symbol of Able.Finally,Hester with her virtues wins the respect of the people, "A" became the symbol of the Angel. With the development of the plot, Hester gradually moves towards awakening and mature, tenacious against the Puritan rule, and thus the "A" has the meaning of an indomitable woman-- Amazon.The letter A is a symbol of love and it also represents a punishment from the God. The presence of the scarlet letter saves the soul of Hester, regulates her virtues, make people painful but enjoy the regained life, the author gives A multiple meanings.
During this period,Dimmesdale is also in suffering,he can do nothing for Hester but to watch her being teased at ,and no matter how much he loves his daughter Pearl, he cannot let others know their true relationship between each other. He suffers from his conscience.He cried in the forest :“I have laughed, in bitterness and agony of heart, at the contrast between what I seem and what I am! And Satan laughs at it!” (206) So here,A in Dimmesdale,is given another meaning--Agony.
Little Pearl brings me happiness when reading the novel.Maybe she
is the only bright character who can bring us cheers. She is the daughter of Hester and Dimmesdale. First of all,the word “pearl”comes from the Bible which means a very precious thing.Recorded in the Bible, God allows a merchant to sell all their possessions to buy a pearl, and tells him that this pearl is his paradise.Hester pays a heavy price for the arrival of the Pearl. Daughter Pearl occupies a very important position in her heart, Pearl is all of her wealth.The “Scarlet Letter”was adapted into a film in 1994.Hester who is acted by Demi Moore in the movie looks just like a Pearl.

Walden
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), the author of Walden, was born in Concord, Massachusetts. When he was a child, he always went to the woods and field with his old brother. So he loves the nature very much. In the middle of 19th century, American economies developed so rapidly that most people pursuit the material life and ignore the spiritual life. But Thoreau wants to live a simple life. Also for the Transcendentalist Movement was centered in Concord and Emerson had a great influence on him. All these made Thoreau go to build a cabin on the shore of Walden Pond and live alone to close to the nature in 1845. Later, he wrote the famous book, Walden, which mainly talks about his life and thoughts during he lived alone in the woods near Walden Pond.
When Walden was published in 1854, it was not well accepted by people. Instead it was regarded as "wicked and heathenish" .It was published only one time until Thoreau died of disease. But many years later especially in twentieth century, it was gradually known and appreciated by lots of readers all over the world. This is a book which tells in spring Thoreau starts building a cabin in the woods， thinking about life, reading some books, and listening to the sound of nature. In autumn, he cultivates beans, observes Walden Pond. In winter, the Walden Pond freeze, lots of animals accompanies with him. As spring's coming, the Walden and other ponds melt. Every thing in nature is awake and reborn including Thoreau. After two years, Thoreau leaves. Thoreau first writes that most people pursuit their necessary things of life such as fashionable clothes, houses and equipment. They pursuit these things while Thoreau go to the woods to building a cabin which only costs $28.12, eating simple food and needing little furniture. So one of chapters in his book, “Higher Law", emphasizes more on the spiritual aspect instead of the satisfaction of material. Further more; he urges people to read more classic literature such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and other great writers’ masterpiece.
He also writes that though he lives alone in the woods, he is close to nature and makes himself as a part of nature. He lives
alone, but sometimes he also talks with his visitors who are honest, sincere, thinkable and loving their life.
Thoreau also mentions that the noise in the town and the whistle of train disturb the quite life of the town. However, in the woods life is quite. When he lives in the woods, he can listen to animals' sounds such as bird's singing, owl’s hooting, cockerel’s crowing etc. He lives with animals friendly. He also describes the Walden Pond. The water, blue and green, clear and pure, freezes in winter and melts in spring.
When I was reading Walden, I felt that I was listening to a wise man’s talking. The words and phrases about the nature especially the Walden Pond are beautiful and fascinating. The sentences are full of wisdom and philosophy.
Reading this book reminds me of those people who work hard to earn money, waste lots of money to buy luxury and expensive things, waste time to entertain themselves. In my point of view, they may easily lose themselves, and though their bodies are full, their minds are hungry. The real life is to make every complicate thing to be simple and enrich our heart and soul. In a word, just simplicity 、simplicity and simplicity!
One of Thoreau's thoughts about solitude attracts me deeply for I’m the person who likes to be alone. There are some reasons for why I like to be alone: Firstly I think that living with others is easy going to have a conflict whatever you are best friends. Secondly just as Thoreau saying ‘a man thinking or working always alone and let him be where he will’. I always spent most of time to study, and I like to make myself busy all the time, so I have little time to stay with others. In addition to, what
I'm thinking and interested in is quite different from others. I like studying at library and reading books but don't like pursuit fashionable and new trend things for it makes me feel tired and bored. So I always live alone and people who around me think I must be lonely. Actually it's not true. They don't understand me at all. When I'm studying, learning or reading, I don't think other things, just immersing in the ocean of knowledge .My heart is quite calm. And if learn new knowledge I got a feeling of happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment. So I was so surprised that what Thoreau said was exactly same to what I thought. I was so glad to find a person who has the same idea with me. When Thoreau lived alone in the woods, people did not understand him, even Emerson thought what he did was wrong. And now, people who around me think my life is not good. But I think Thoreau’s life was successful, meaningful and happy, so do I. Because I think that the success and happiness of life all come
from exactly value. Everyone deeply desires of themselves life. When you know what the value of yourself is, meanwhile you can enjoy your life according to the value every time. You will find that everyday you have full of energy and enthusiasm to do anything, hear the sure sound from your heart, and often feel intense achievement, the most important is that your heart is peace and calm.
Last but not least, I envy Thoreau so much for he lives in such a beautiful and comfortable nature environment. He can breathe the fresh air, live with wild animal friendly; appreciate the scenery of Walden Pond etc. While in modern society, people pursuit their own interests to hunt and kill animals, cut down trees and pollute the rivers and so on. As a result, the number of wildlife is decreasing, the area of lake is shrinking, and the water is not pure any more. The environment problems such as globe warming, climate change and air and water pollution have been becoming increasingly serious. Reading this book makes me be aware of protecting the environment to realize the harmony between human and nature.
Although I may not understand Thoreau's thoughts completely, I’m really benefited from reading the book, Walden.

一、举实例
思维短路，举实例！提出一个观点，举实例！提出一个方案，举实例！而且者也是我们揭示一个观点最好的方式，任何情况下，只要我们无法继续文章，不管三七二十一，尽管举例子！

英语翻译的感想
英语翻译，作为一种文化的传播方式，不仅仅是逐字逐句的转换，更是一种带有个人文学色彩的创作，个人的语言风格，思维方式，理解方式乃至阅历，都会对其翻译创作产生巨大的影响。很多人把翻译当成了电文解码或是代数演算般的文字替换，从而低估了翻译的价值，好的翻译必定是形神兼备，不仅能清楚地表达出原作者的意思，还能传达其文字内涵背后的情感意味。
这就要求翻译者要精通熟知两种不同的文化及其背景，并且融会贯通，在清楚理解原作者的基础上，找到另一种文化中相同的情景表达，而非逐字逐词地转化，那样必定是词不达意或者生硬枯燥的，简直就像是得到一本武功秘籍却不能参透，只学得皮毛而无法领会其真正内涵和精髓意蕴，丢失了其大部分的价值。光中先生打了一个有趣的比方——直译，甚至硬译、死译，充其量只能成为剥制的标本：一根羽毛不少，可惜是一只死鸟，徒有形貌，没有飞翔。诗人齐阿地认为，从一种文字到另一种文字的翻译，很像从一种乐器到另一种乐器的变调：四弦的提琴虽然拉不出88键大钢琴的声音，但那种旋律的精神多少可以传递过来。真有灵感的译文，像投胎重生的灵魂一般令人觉得是一种“再创造”。
如何翻译好一部作品呢，我认为各种翻译技巧是其次，重点是要心中有存货，要有大量的知识储备，并且这些知识不仅仅只是死记硬背的，还应该是在实际生活中理解领悟的，懂得其延生和背后的内涵，只有真正理解透彻以后，再通过各种技巧，在两种文化中融会贯通，熟练转换。
很多人以为只要学好翻译目标的语言就能翻译好，我觉得这是不对的，如果你自己不能理解好母语，又怎么能在理解其他语言的基础上准确转换成自己的语言？
另外就是要多阅读，通过阅读吸收大量的语言词汇和相应的表达，而且阅读的过程中就给你提供了这个词句表达的恰当场景语境，很多词都有其延伸的含义，在不同的情景中有不同的释义，如果只是理解了其中某个意思然后生搬硬套，很容易产生令人啼笑皆非的场景。有时候一个场景又能有多个词语来表达，如何准确区分其中的细微差别和作者的意图，这些都是需要通过长期大量的阅读理解后方能学会的，正所谓厚积薄发，翻译也是一个这样的过程，简单地翻译出文章的意思容易，翻译出作者的意图则难，要翻译出类似原作风格或者优美的准确达意的文章就更难了。
翻译中的加减增删，完全是取决于作者所要表达的重点和意图，有些东西在另一种文化中完全是令人无法理解的或者是累赘的，就需要通过一定的修饰，使其变成能让人理解的意会的相应东西。而有些细节是反应作者的意图或者文章的暗线或者是一语双关用来讽刺，暗喻等等的就需要巧妙地转化，这其中的技巧还需要我更进一步的学习。
有的句子单独摘出来就有许多种意思，如果翻译还需要参考前后文章，这就是所谓的语境，只是有时这也是很难推断的，也许作者想要表达的也有多个意思，该怎么翻译才是准确的也很难推断，也许通过更过的阅读能更好的理解，总之翻译是一条漫长的道路，正所谓一千个人就有一千本哈姆雷特，每个人理解的角度都是不一样的，翻译出来的也会有差异，还需要我们多加的学习，通过学习掌握更精确简练的表达，更地道的说法，翻译永无止境。

上海英语中级口译完全自学通过心得（口试部分）2009-03-31 20:24 | (分类:默认分类) 转自马上要考了....留着用~ 写在前面的话这个世界上牛人很多，但我坚信，根据正态分布原则，大多数人还是和我一样的。本着这一原则，我才敢在这里以过来人（而不是成功者）的身份发表一点感想。牛人们就没有必要看了，以免让你们见笑。考证的实质是确立一个目标，然后尽自己最大的努力去完成，做到价值实现，是一个磨砺心志、走向成功的过程。如果有人认为我写得太浅显、没用，看到这里就可以点击页面右上方的“×”了，不必为此拍砖。我不指望这篇文章万人分享，但也不想花一晚上时间整理出来的、旨在希望像我一样的非牛人都能取得令自己满意的成绩的东西得到的尽是些负面评价。文章是给非牛人写的，就好比在市场中，法拉利和奇瑞一样能生存，只是分别抓住了不同层次的市场。一、简介口试在每年5月和11月，分为口语与口译两部分。口语部分要求考生就指定话题作三分钟左右的命题发言，话题后面有三个提示问题，但不要求一定要按照问题阐述观点。考生拿到口语试题后有五分钟的准备时间。口译分英译汉和汉译英两部分，每部分均要求口译主题各不相同的两个段落。各两段，每段四断，每断两或三句。每断单独评分，2/3及以上翻译对即算对，翻译对11断及以上可以通过。建议大家笔试结束后马上开始复习，不要等到笔试成绩公布，时间肯定来不及。考试委员会为了赚口试报名费，笔试一般都会让你过的。再者一鼓作气，再而衰，三而竭，第一次的通过概率其实最大。口试全程共会接触到三个教室：备考区、侯考室和考场。备考区是大教室，供考生等待考试用；侯考区是中型教室，在这里考生将得到口语试题并准备5分钟；考场就是上课的教室或教师休息室。（1） 备考区。因为口试分批进行，每批的考题是一样的。为防止作弊，从进入备考区直到参加完口试离开教学楼，考生不准使用任何通讯工具，否则将取消考试资格，这一点一定要切记。进入备考区出示必要的证件，然后带手机的同学会被要求将手机关闭并封存在一个信封内。然后考生会拿到一张“承诺书”，下半部分签个字裁下来，上半部分不要扔，留着记口语题目（这个后面要谈到）。考试的先后顺序根据口试号，分为多批同时进行。具体什么时候参加口试事先并不知道，所以建议带一些干粮，以免最后一批考在等待3个多小时后饥肠辘辘。但是少喝
水，理由就不用我多说了吧。（2） 侯考区。在备考区被考官叫到考号后会被带到侯考区。监考人员发下一张A4纸，上面有口语的题目和提示问题，有5分钟时间准备，可以使用字典和电子词典，但是不能和周围同学讨论（和外面同学讨论当然更不可以啦）。另外考卷不能带入考场，上面也不能作任何标记，所以你必须记住考题。不要记在口试证后面，据说有的考官看到会反感，写在“承诺书”后面好了。（3） 正式考试。离开侯考区，考生按照顺序找到属于自己的考试教室。因为前一个人可能还在考试，所以你可能要在教室外等。开门进去，在你面前是两位考官和两台录音机，一台放口译试题，另一台录下你的口译。检查证件、发记录纸，然后开始录音，口试正式开始。在进行口语部分前要说“My name is…., my registration number is…”。接着就是口语和口译……二、口语口试重点考察口译，对口语的要求并不高。看了以上介绍不难发现，口语实际上就是写一篇命题小作文的开头和后面内容的提纲，在候考室准备时大致记住，这对中口笔试通过的人并不难，而且口译备考的同时也为口语提供了素材。个人认为不用单独准备口语，《口语教程》没时间就不要看了。关于口语会让你讲几分钟的问题，我考的两次第一次说了30秒，第二次没算时间，但应该不超过一分钟，我也知道有同学说满了三分钟。但总体趋势是越来越短，一般来说你把第一个提示问题讲完，得出一个初步结论后就会被叫停。总之我们按三分钟时间准备，但考官打断你时也不要太意外，马上切换到口译状态。除非你讲得太结结巴巴，或是发音奇差，否则都会过的。口语也不是一点不重要。口语好的同学会给考官一个好印象，在口译部分有优势。考官可能看你前面翻对了10个句子，最后一个句子翻得差强人意，他/她会在评分表上写：口语好，建议通过。（这个我不太清楚，出自《新东方内部——朱巧莲老师高口口试冲刺班完全笔记》）三、口译1.复习建议大家看两本书，一本是《口译教程》，另一本是《新东方口试备考精要》。先自己认真练习一遍，我用的是电脑，具体流程：打开听力文件和“录音机”程序；播放一句听力文件同时做笔记，暂停；按录音键，口译，暂停；再放一句听力，如此循环；随时保存录音文件。教程中政治、经贸、外事接待、中国传统文化、旅游景点、环保等都是常考题，但是非重点也不能完全不看，我考的就是香槟那篇。《新东方口试备考精要》这本书极其重要，

Perhaps it was time to escape, in a lightening and thundering night, he escaped from the prison through the hole he had dug for twenty years . He was free eventually . Being a huge film fan myself, this is a film I enjoy from start to finish, this movie is beautiful and genius. It shows what prison life is like at the time which may not be innovative because obviously it has been done before, but it still is a movie that is lightened up by the superb actings of Tim Robbins (Andy Dufrane) and Morgan Freeman (Red).
